If you sell to consumers in the Netherlands, you need iDEAL in your checkout: in 2025 it handled more than one and a half billion payments, about 70 percent of Dutch e-commerce transactions. A Dutch shopper who does not see the iDEAL button at checkout often leaves, because iDEAL is how the Dutch pay online, straight from their banking app, without a card.

iDEAL is now becoming Wero, the payment brand of the European Payments Initiative (EPI). Since the end of January 2026 the button reads "iDEAL | Wero". According to the plan of EPI and the Dutch Payments Association, every Dutch bank connects to Wero in October 2026, payments move over step by step, and by 31 December 2027 every shop that took iDEAL has moved to Wero. After that the iDEAL brand disappears.

This guide is for a shop outside the Netherlands that sells there, or wants to: why iDEAL matters, what changes with Wero and when, what you do on Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom checkout, and how the Dutch payment mix differs from Belgium and Germany. The Dutch version, for Dutch shop owners, is iDEAL en Wero in je webshop.

How iDEAL works

The shopper picks iDEAL at checkout, chooses their bank or scans a code, confirms in their banking app, and is back in your shop with the payment done. The money comes straight from their bank account. For you as a merchant iDEAL is a payment method your payment provider offers, next to cards and wallets; you do not contract with the banks yourself.

What you do, per type of shop

Your shopWhat happensWhat you do
Hosted checkout of your provider, such as Shopify Payments, Mollie Checkout or Stripe Checkoutthe provider updates the button and the processingnothing, except switching Wero on if your provider asks
WooCommerce or another platform with a provider pluginthe plugin shows the new logo after an updateupdate the plugin and check the button
Custom checkout on your provider's APIyour code shows the logo and the nameupdate logo and text; later add Wero as a method and remove iDEAL
Payment links in emails or invoicesthe link goes to your provider's payment pagenothing, unless you show the logo yourself

Mollie writes that the iDEAL logo is now shown as "iDEAL | Wero" and that only custom checkouts need to act. Stripe set 29 January to 31 March 2026 for the new button, says hosted integrations need no action, and that for the full move you switch Wero on and iDEAL off in the dashboard; it also warned that merchants who did not update in time could see iDEAL switched off. Read your own provider's notices.

Selling into the Netherlands from abroad

A foreign shop can take iDEAL through any international payment provider that offers it; you do not need a Dutch company or bank account. What makes Dutch shoppers trust a foreign shop goes beyond the button:

  • Prices in euros, with VAT includedDutch consumers expect the price they pay, VAT at 21 or 9 percent included.
  • Dutch on the siteEnglish works for many Dutch shoppers, but a checkout in Dutch converts better. Dutch in the Netherlands and Dutch in Flanders use different words; see Dutch vs Flemish.
  • Clear delivery and returnsEU consumer law gives 14 days to withdraw; say how returns work.
  • VAT across the borderAbove the EU-wide threshold of 10,000 euros a year in cross-border sales to consumers, you charge Dutch VAT, usually through the One Stop Shop. That is a question for your accountant.

BelgiumBancontactBancontact, from the same provider
Germanya mix of PayPal, cards, invoice and direct debitPayPal and cards first

A shop selling into both Dutch-speaking markets needs two buttons: iDEAL for the Netherlands and Bancontact for Belgium. Showing the right one first, based on the shopper's country, is a small change that customers notice.

What iDEAL costs

What you pay per payment depends on your provider: the banks charge the provider, and the provider sets its own price per transaction. EPI says Wero pricing stays broadly in line with today's iDEAL with Wero pricing until 31 December 2028. Compare your own rate, not a list price. What a whole shop costs, platform, payments and maintenance included, is in e-commerce website cost.

A checklist for your checkout

  • Does your checkout show the logo and name your provider uses now?
  • Is your payment plugin on its latest version?
  • Are there old iDEAL logos in your emails, your FAQ or your footer?
  • Did you make a test payment after each change at your provider?
  • Do you know when your provider offers Wero, and who switches it on?
  • Is Bancontact next to it if you also sell to Belgians?

Short answers on iDEAL

Do I need iDEAL to sell in the Netherlands?

In practice yes. About 70 percent of Dutch e-commerce payments went through iDEAL in 2025, and many shoppers leave a checkout without it.

What is the iDEAL payment method?

A Dutch online payment from the shopper's bank account, confirmed in their banking app. It is now becoming Wero, the payment brand of the European Payments Initiative.

When does iDEAL become Wero?

The button reads iDEAL | Wero since early 2026. According to the plan, every iDEAL merchant has moved to Wero by 31 December 2027, after which the iDEAL brand disappears.

Can a foreign shop offer iDEAL?

Yes, through any payment provider that offers it. You do not need a Dutch company or bank account.

Does iDEAL work in Belgium?

Belgian shoppers pay with Bancontact. Offer both if you sell in both countries.

Is iDEAL free for shops?

No. You pay your payment provider a fee per transaction; the amount depends on your provider and your volume.

Mostly by bank transfer against an invoice. A payment link in the invoice can lead to your provider's page, where iDEAL with Wero is offered.
