Bespoke software development for UK companies, built in Ghent

One hour ahead of London, three hours by train, and a fixed price for every module you sign.

Bespoke software development for a UK company: the fleet and reports screens of a platform we built, in English, example with demo data

A Belgian team for a British brief

Yes, a UK company can have its bespoke software built by a developer in Belgium, and the practical differences from a supplier in Manchester are smaller than most buyers expect: no Belgian VAT on the invoice to a UK business, personal data that may flow freely between the UK and the EU until at least December 2031, one hour of time difference, and a train that gets you from St Pancras to our office in under three hours. What does change is the contract: governing law, intellectual property and data processing need to be written down, as they should be with any supplier.

Bespoke is the British word for what the rest of the English-speaking world calls custom software: software designed for how your business works, rather than a package you bend your process around. It makes sense when your process is what sets you apart, when you have outgrown spreadsheets, or when three subscriptions and a pile of exports do the work of one system. When it does not make sense, we say so: a good package at a monthly fee beats a build for most standard needs.

This page is for a UK business weighing a team on the Continent. It covers what a bespoke build costs in the UK and in Belgium, the tax, data and contract points, how a project with us runs, and the work it rests on.

What bespoke software costs in the UK, and here

UK suppliers price bespoke work by the day. The median day rate for a contract developer in the UK sits around 475 pounds, and agencies charge more because the day includes project management, testing and the risk of the estimate; what the UK market charges per role is in UK developer day rates. Belgian agencies charge 50 to 150 euros an hour in the market as a whole.

On labour cost, Belgium is not a low-cost choice. Eurostat puts the average hourly labour cost in Belgium at 48.20 euros in 2024, among the highest in the EU and above Germany and France; Poland and Portugal sit around 19 euros. If price per day is what decides, a team in Central or Eastern Europe will quote less, and Eastern vs Western Europe developers sets out what you trade for it.

How you buyHow it is pricedWhat stays with you
UK contractora day rate, often through an umbrella or a personal companymanagement, testing, the IR35 decision and the risk of the estimate
UK agencya day rate or a fixed bidthe risk of changes, if the bid is loose
Team in Central or Eastern European hourly or daily rate, sometimes a dedicated team per montha backlog you write and steer week by week
VBS in Ghenta fixed price per module, after a first callthe decisions on what to build and in which order

We do not sell days. After a first call we write your scope down as modules, each with what drives its size, and give a fixed price per module. You sign the modules you want, in the order you want. A change after signing becomes a new line with its own price, agreed before anyone starts. Put that price next to a UK day rate multiplied by an honest estimate, and compare what each includes. Typical budgets per type of project are in custom software development cost.

Tax and data are simpler than most UK buyers expect. Write down governing law, the assignment of intellectual property and a data processing agreement, as you would with any supplier, and have your accountant confirm the VAT treatment.

Data between London and Ghent

Personal data moves between the UK and the EU without extra paperwork. The UK treats the EU as adequate, and on 19 December 2025 the European Commission renewed its adequacy decision for the UK until 27 December 2031. A Belgian supplier processing your customers' data therefore needs a data processing agreement, as a UK supplier would, and no transfer clauses. Since 2026 the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR differ on cookies, legitimate interests and a few other points; where that touches the software we build, we design for both, and the differences are in UK GDPR vs EU GDPR.

Where the software runs is your choice, and each option is simple on paper:

When bespoke is the right call

  • Build bespoke ifyour team works around a package with spreadsheets on the side, the rules you apply are specific to your trade, or the data lives in several systems that do not talk.
  • Buy a package ifyour process is standard for your sector and a package does 80 percent of it; pay the subscription and keep the money.
  • Combine both ifa package covers the core and the gap is one integration or one portal; that is often the cheapest bespoke project of all.

The longer answer, with five years of costs side by side, is in build vs buy software.

How a project with us runs

  1. A first callYou describe the process today and what hurts. We ask for real examples: an export, a spreadsheet, a form people fill in.
  2. Scope and fixed pricesWe write the scope down as modules with what drives each one, and a fixed price per module. You sign what you need.
  3. Sprints with demosTwo-week sprints, a demo at the end of each on a test link of your own, one written channel for questions and decisions.
  4. Go-live with a way backEvery release goes out with a backup and a way back; on our platforms the switch-over takes 2 to 6 seconds.
  5. Running and changingWe keep the software running and price every change before it starts, as its own line.

Work we build on

We have no client in the UK today, and we say that plainly. The closest work is what we build for companies in Belgium that run on our software every day, in more than one language. For DA Logistics, a haulier, we built the platform it runs on: weekly planning, fuel stock under Belgium's excise rules down to the litre, fleet files and a driver app in Dutch, English and Turkish for around thirty drivers. The same core became a product: Zuco Logistics runs it on a server of its own, with its own fuel model, and went live with domain, certificate and app in 57 minutes. For a payroll office, the Business Centrum platform replaces the spreadsheets it ran its clients on, with a portal where those clients sign in.

For a UK client we work in English in every ticket, call and document, plan the weekly call in your morning or afternoon, and come to London for a workshop when a decision deserves a room. See custom software development and web application development, use the time zone overlap calculator if your team is spread further, or book a call.

What UK buyers ask us

Can a UK company use a software developer in Belgium?
Yes. You contract with a Belgian company as with any supplier. The invoice carries no Belgian VAT, data flows freely under the EU adequacy decision for the UK, and the contract sets governing law and the assignment of the intellectual property.
Does IR35 apply when we hire an agency in Belgium?
IR35 targets individuals working through their own company. A project contract with an agency whose employees do the work is a different arrangement; ask your adviser to confirm for your contract.
Is Belgium cheaper than the UK for software development?
Not by default. Belgian labour costs are among the highest in Europe. Compare a fixed price per module against a UK day rate times an honest estimate, and look at what each includes.
How far is Ghent from London?
About two hours on the Eurostar to Brussels and half an hour on the train to Ghent: under three hours door to door from St Pancras, and one hour ahead on the clock.
