Web design West Flanders
Web design in West Flanders
A province with three economies, a different kind of site for each, and guests and buyers who rarely speak Dutch first.

Coast, centre and south
Web design in West Flanders is about a province that is not one whole. At the coast everything turns on tourism and second homes, from Knokke-Heist to De Panne. In the centre, around Roeselare and Tielt, sit manufacturers and publishers. In the south, Kortrijk, Waregem and Menen work with one foot in France. A site that works at the coast does not work in Waregem, and the other way round.
At the end of 2025, 149,492 companies had their seat in the province. Construction is second, and agriculture and fishing count 9,458 firms, more than in any other Flemish province. This page is written for owners who work in English: a hotel or rental run by people from abroad, a plant with a foreign parent, a founder who moved to the coast. Per zone you read which site fits, which languages your customers speak, a fact per city that makes the difference, which support the province and the cities give, and how we approach it from Ghent.
The province in figures
| Companies in West Flanders, end of 2025 | Number |
|---|---|
| Professional and technical services | 27,047 |
| Construction | 22,535 |
| Trade and car repair | 21,948 |
| Administrative services | 9,869 |
| Other services | 9,476 |
| Agriculture, forestry and fishing | 9,458 |
| Hospitality | 9,274 |
| Industry | 8,910 |
In 2025, 12,735 companies started and 12,102 stopped. Construction, trade and the professions are large everywhere. What sets the zones apart is hospitality at the coast, industry in the centre and the south, and agriculture inland.

Our advice per city, based on which kinds of company are most numerous there. Your own customers decide.
The coast: selling to people who are there for a while
At the coast you sell to people who are there for a weekend or a week. They search on their phone, often in French, English or German, and want to know straight away whether there is room. A site for a flat, a restaurant or a bike rental needs a calendar or booking, prices you see without emailing, and more than one language.
- Knokke-Heisthas 32,163 residents and the most second homes at the coast. Next to hospitality there are 503 property firms, more than in many bigger cities. A site for rentals or property works there in Dutch and French, and in English for owners from abroad.
- Ostendhas two economies: the seafront and the port, with offshore wind and aquaculture. What that means for a site is on web design in Ostend.
- Brugesreceived almost 8 million visitors in its centre in 2024. How a Bruges business takes bookings direct instead of through a platform is on web design in Bruges.
What a rental site must hold is on direct booking website; for restaurants and cafés on restaurant website.
Which languages, zone by zone
| Zone | Who buys | Languages your site needs |
|---|---|---|
| Coast | tourists, second-home owners, residents | Dutch and French, English and German for guests from further away |
| Bruges | overnight guests and day visitors from all over | the languages of your largest guest groups, English first |
| Centre | buyers, architects, applicants | Dutch, plus English, French or German for buyers abroad |
| South | French and Belgian buyers | Dutch and French, English for export |
Each language is its own version with its own titles, not a translate button. Every Belgian business site shows its company number, and prices for consumers include VAT; see company number on your website. If you take bookings or sell online, the European Accessibility Act may apply to your booking flow since 28 June 2025.
The centre: manufacturers, publishers and the inland port
Around Roeselare, Izegem and Tielt sit companies that make things and sell to other companies. Roeselare has Roularta and one of the largest inland ports in Belgium; Tielt has the publisher Lannoo and carpet maker Balta. Their client is not a tourist but a buyer, an architect or an applicant. A site there has to bring in quote requests and hire people.
- Choose a site with a page per product or service ifyour client compares and asks for a quote. Each page gets its own title on what a buyer types.
- Choose a careers page ifyou are growing and struggle to find people. In the centre of the province, for many manufacturers that is the most important page of the site.
- Choose an online shop only ifyou really sell to consumers or small customers; otherwise a catalogue with a quote request is enough.
What a new business in the centre of Roeselare needs on the day it opens is on web design in Roeselare.
The south: the border and export
Kortrijk is 25 kilometres from Lille, and Menen borders Halluin. For a company in the south, France is not an export market but the neighbourhood. A French version is no luxury, and a quote form in French brings in buyers who would otherwise call a French competitor. Waregem has room for growing firms on the new Blauwpoort business park. What such an export site looks like, with a French and an English version, is on web design in Kortrijk and our page on multilingual website development.
Support from the province and the cities
POM West-Vlaanderen, the province's development agency, helps starters with Start&GO and gives towns figures on their retail. On 28 and 29 October 2026 POM holds the Bedrijvencontactdagen business days in Bruges, with a part on digital growth. The cities themselves mostly support people filling a shop unit.
| City | What the city gives | For what |
|---|---|---|
| Bruges | a grant for retail and hospitality, up to 10,000 euros | starting in the main shopping area or a neighbourhood shop outside it |
| Kortrijk | attraction grant, 2,500 to 10,000 euros per zone | filling an empty shop unit |
| Roeselare | a grant for a new shop and a restyling grant | opening or renewing a business in the centre |
| Waregem | a starter grant and 1,000 euros for marketing | a new business in Waregem |
| Knokke-Heist | free coaching for entrepreneurs | advice, not money |
Waregem is one of the few Flemish cities that supports marketing directly. Always check the conditions with the city before you sign anything. Which Flemish support remains for digital projects, now that the SME wallet stops on 1 January 2027, is in Flanders digitalisation grants and website grants in Belgium.
What a West Flanders site costs
What a site has to do sets the price, not the zone. A single page usually costs 500 to 1,500 euros in Belgium, a company site 2,000 to 6,000 euros and an online shop 4,000 to 15,000 euros or more, excluding VAT. A calendar for the coast, a French version for the south or a quote form with a calculation for the centre moves you up that range. Our prices start at 1,500 euros for a custom site; after a first conversation the project price is fixed. You can do the sum yourself with the website cost calculator, and why prices vary so much is in website cost.
From Ghent to the whole province
Our office on the Sint-Baafsplein is on the edge of West Flanders. Tielt and Kortrijk are 35 minutes away by car, Bruges 44, Ostend 47 and Knokke-Heist 55 minutes; the train takes you to Bruges or Kortrijk in half an hour. We come over for the first meeting and for the photos, speak English or Dutch, and show the site on a test address until you want it online.
We have no client in West Flanders, and we would rather say so at once. We did build booking sites for Villa Lidia and No.4 Lange Ast, and sites in four languages for a law firm and Business Centrum; across all our clients more than 1,700 pages are online. What we do is at website design; for the neighbouring province at web design in East Flanders.
Prices a guest sees before they email
For Villa Lidia, a holiday villa in Umbria, we built a site in English and Dutch with a reservation form, an availability calendar and a small admin panel where the owner opens or blocks dates herself. A guest from Lille or Cologne sees what a stay costs and whether it is free before writing a single email.
A landlord in De Haan, a guesthouse in Damme or a hotel in Knokke needs exactly those parts. For No.4 Lange Ast, a village house in Kruisem, we built the same in four languages, with a calendar that takes over the Airbnb and Booking bookings.

Website design
How VBS helps you with this
We build your site from design to copy, imagery and code, in one team, so that Google and your buyers find it and get in touch.
- Design and copy built on your buyers' questions
- Fast, multilingual when you need it, at a fixed price
- Forms, cookieless analytics and hosting on AWS
How we approach it is on our page about Website design.
