Marketing in Bruges

Marketing agency for Bruges hospitality and retail

For businesses that serve visitors in season and locals out of it.

Eight million visitors, one hundred and twenty thousand residents

A marketing agency in Bruges works for businesses with two audiences. Bruges counted almost 8 million tourists in 2024, nearly 6.9 million of them day visitors and just under 1.1 million overnight guests, in a city of about 120,000 people. A hotel, guesthouse, restaurant or shop in the centre lives off both groups, and they search, book and decide at different moments.

This page is written for the owner or manager who works in English: an international hotel group, a guesthouse run by people who moved to Bruges, a restaurant with an international team. It covers when to reach which audience, how to win direct bookings instead of paying a platform, what the city funds and what an agency costs.

Who decides when

The city wants to slow the growth of day trips and encourage overnight stays; the number of day visitors still rose 13 percent in 2024. For your marketing that means the overnight guest matters more, and that guest decides weeks ahead.

AudienceWhen they decideWhere they searchWhat works
Overnight guestsweeks or months before the tripGoogle, Instagram, booking platformsa site where they can book directly, reels of your rooms and street, ads aimed at people planning a city break
Day visitorson the day or the evening beforeGoogle Maps on a phonea Business Profile with correct hours, photos and reviews, a menu that reads well on a phone
Localsall year, mostly off-seasonInstagram, Facebook, word of moutha regulars' offer, news from your business, joining the events in your street
Companies and groupsmonths aheadGoogle, LinkedIn, their own networka page for groups and seminars with capacity and price per person

Most businesses in Bruges aim all their marketing at the season. The ones that reach locals in January, February and November fill the months when visitors stay away. For day visitors the map pack decides, which is the work of local SEO; for guests planning months ahead, Google Ads on searches like 'hotel bruges' and a strong site carry more weight.

Write for the visitor's language

Overnight guests in Bruges come from all over: the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Germany, the United States, Spain. They search in their own language for 'hotel bruges', 'restaurant brügge' or 'chambre d'hôtes bruges'. A site only in Dutch sends them back to a platform. Write the languages of your largest guest groups as separate versions, each on its own search terms; our page on multilingual website development explains how that works on one domain.

ElementWhat visitors look for
Rooms or menuphotos taken in your place, prices including VAT and city tax where it applies
Locationwalking time to the Markt and the station, parking, whether cars may enter
Bookingavailability, a simple form, a clear cancellation rule
Reviewsrecent ones, with your replies, in their language where possible

Direct bookings without commission

A hotel, guesthouse or holiday home pays a commission on every platform booking. The platform remains useful to be found, but a guest who came through it once can book direct the next time, if your site lets them. For No.4 Lange Ast, a house for eight in Flanders, we built a four-language site with an availability calendar that combines the Airbnb and Booking calendars, and a request form. For Villa Lidia in Umbria, a two-language site with a reservation form and availability calendar.

Business guests and groups

Bruges is also a city for seminars, team days and incentive trips. Companies book months ahead and compare on practical points: capacity, rooms for breakout sessions, a menu for groups, and a price per person. A separate page for groups, in English and French, with those facts and a request form, reaches planners who would otherwise go to an agency or a platform.

What the city of Bruges funds

Bruges does not fund your own marketing or website. It does fund events by shopping street associations and groups of at least five shops or restaurants that bring buyers to the shopping streets: 500 euros for a customer event, 2,000 euros for a street market (4,000 euros when several associations organise it together), half the cost of a street act, and half of a new initiative up to 3,000 euros. Every event carries the Shopping Brugge logo and the tag #ShoppingBrugge. Plan your own campaigns around those days: a reel on the day, an ad aimed at people nearby, an offer valid only then.

A year in a Bruges guesthouse

MonthWhat happensWhat you do
January and Februaryquiet, locals and a few city breakersoffers for locals, refresh photos, plan the year
March to JuneEaster, long weekends, the first summer bookingsads aimed at people planning a city break, reels of spring in your street
July and Augustfull, day visitors everywherekeep your hours and availability right; spend less, you are full
September and Octoberquieter weeks, business guestsseminar and group offers, autumn reels
November and DecemberChristmas market, end of yearbook early for Christmas, gift vouchers for locals

The pattern is simple: spend in the months before guests decide, not in the months they arrive.

What an agency costs

Agencies in Bruges charge what agencies elsewhere in Flanders charge; our guides to digital agency cost and social media management pricing list the ranges. For a business in the centre, one shoot day per season is often the best spend: your rooms, dishes and street in each season. With VBS you get a fixed price per season for the shoots and the campaigns.

Questions we hear in Bruges

Do I need a site in several languages? If most of your guests come from abroad, yes: at least English, and French or German if those groups are large. Each version needs its own search terms.

When should I start advertising for summer? In February and March. Guests book weeks to months ahead.

Can I do without booking platforms? Rarely completely. Platforms bring new guests; your own site brings back the ones you already had, without commission.

Mistakes we see in Bruges

  • Wrong hours on a holidayVisitors check Google Maps before they walk over. Keep your Google Business Profile up to date.
  • The same message all yearIn July a visitor wants to know where to eat; in February a local wants a reason to come back.
  • Unanswered reviewsGuests read them before they book. Reply to each one; getting more Google reviews shows how to ask without pushing, and the Google review link generator gives you a link and QR code for the counter.
  • Stock photosGuests recognise them, and trust you less. A short film of your place, made on one day, serves the site, social media and ads for months; see corporate video.

Bruges is about 45 minutes from our office in Ghent, so a shoot day in your guesthouse or restaurant is easy to plan in any season.

What we do for a Bruges business

We plan each season around who you want to reach, film your place, make reels and ads on Facebook and Instagram, and keep your site and profile in step. For Les Terrasses de Durbuy, holiday lodges in the Ardennes, we made the launch reel and a golf reel with an external videographer; the golf reel ran as three Meta ads from 13 December 2025 to 24 January 2026.

If you need a site where guests book direct, we build it: see website design. For year-round content, social media management. We are in Ghent, about 45 minutes from Bruges by car, and work in English when your team does.

Local SEO

How VBS helps you with this

We get you found in your own town and region: a page for every town that earns one, a Google profile in order, and the terms locals really type.

  • Town and region pages with their own content, never a copy with a new place name
  • Your Google Business Profile and reviews
  • Tracking per search term and per town

How we approach it is on our page about Local SEO.
