Question

Is Shopify free?

No: after three free days and three months at 1 euro you pay at least Basic, 24 euro a month on yearly billing in the euro area, plus a fee on every payment you receive.

What the trial covers, what you pay per month and per payment afterwards, and when a dearer plan works out cheaper.

What you pay per month and per payment

Shopify has no free plan the way Wix does. After the trial the plan you chose runs at its normal price until you cancel. Prices differ per country; on the euro price list for Belgium:

PlanYearly billing, per monthMonthlyCard through Shopify PaymentsExtra with another provider
Basic24 euro32 euro2% + 0.25 euro2%
Grow69 euro92 euro1.8% + 0.25 euro1%
Advanced289 euro384 euro1.6% + 0.25 euro0.6%

Local payment methods have their own fee: a Bancontact payment, for buyers in Belgium paying in euro, costs 0.39 euro on every plan. Check the rate for the method your market uses, such as iDEAL in the Netherlands. Every plan and what it includes is in our guide to Shopify cost. What a set-up store for several EU countries involves is on Shopify agency.

  • Bancontact 7.80 euro

Why your payment provider weighs more than your plan

Choose a provider other than Shopify Payments, such as Stripe or Mollie, and Shopify adds 2 percent on Basic to every order, on top of what that provider charges. At 2,000 euro of sales a month that is 40 euro, more than the plan. If you need another provider, price Grow from the start.

Selling to consumers in other EU countries? Above 10,000 euro a year of cross-border sales you charge the VAT of the buyer's country, usually through the One Stop Shop. A wider comparison with other platforms is in ecommerce website cost.

What Shopify does not handle for you

Shopify puts your store online and takes care of hosting, updates and security. Some rules stay your job. Selling to EU consumers means an accessible checkout, unless you are a micro-enterprise with fewer than ten staff and at most 2 million euro in turnover or balance sheet; see the European Accessibility Act website requirements. A theme does not solve that by itself: your colours, photos and apps count too. If you invoice businesses in Belgium, e-invoices through Peppol are required since 1 January 2026, see is Peppol mandatory in Belgium. And tracking with a Meta or Google pixel needs a cookie banner.

VAT on your plan, and leaving

Does Shopify charge VAT on my subscription?

Shopify asks EU stores for a VAT number that VIES confirms as valid for cross-border trade. With one, VAT on your subscription is reverse-charged and you do not pay it to Shopify.

Can I leave Shopify later?

Products, customers and orders export as CSV. The theme and apps stay with Shopify, so the store is rebuilt elsewhere, with redirects for your old URLs.

Shopify or something else

  • Choose Shopify ifyou want to sell fast with a standard store, without hosting or updating anything yourself.
  • Choose WooCommerce ifyou already run WordPress and have someone to maintain it; see is WooCommerce free and Shopify or WooCommerce.
  • Choose a European platform ifyour data must stay in Europe; see Shopify alternatives in Europe and Shopify or Lightspeed.
  • Choose custom ifthe store must link to your stock or planning, or fees per order weigh too much as you grow.

Webshop development

How VBS helps with your store

For a standard store Shopify is often a good start, and we tell you so. We build for stores that need more: a link to your stock, accounting or e-invoicing, an order flow that fits your product, or a store that keeps fees per order low as you grow. That is webshop development. For SN Group we built calculators that let visitors assemble a price themselves, which no standard store does.
