SEO in Brussels
SEO agency for Brussels

One site, three languages, each version written on the terms its readers type.
The same buyer, three ways to search
SEO in Brussels means being found by a buyer who may search in French, Dutch or English, sometimes all three in the same week. An SEO agency in Brussels has to decide with you which language to rank in first, how to structure the site so the versions do not compete, and where the competition is thin enough to win quickly.
This page explains how search in Brussels differs per language, the choice between one domain and three, what hreflang does, and what the first three months of an SEO project look like. It does not promise rankings.
Where competition is thin
We asked Google in Belgium on 24 October 2026 how people search for agencies in Brussels, once in each language. French search is the broadest: Google suggests 'agence seo bruxelles', 'agence google ads bruxelles' and 'agence social media bruxelles' as typed. English is strong for the large categories. In Dutch, Google suggests 'marketingbureau brussel' and 'reclamebureau brussel', but for 'seo brussel' it answers with 'seo agency brussels': there is no Dutch SEO search with enough volume to show.
| Language | What it means for your SEO |
|---|---|
| French | the most searches and the most competitors; win with depth, one page per service and municipality |
| English | fewer local searches, but many international buyers; competitors are often weaker on English pages |
| Dutch | fewer searches in Brussels, but almost nobody writes good Belgian Dutch pages for the city |
The same logic holds for your own services. Before you write anything, check per language which terms Google suggests in Belgium for what you sell. That list is your term map.
One domain or three
Most companies are best served by one .be domain with a folder per language: /fr, /nl and /en. All versions share the authority the domain builds up, you run one Search Console property, and links to any version help the others. A separate domain per language makes sense only when your brand name differs per language. The figure below sets out the choice.
What hreflang does, and where it goes wrong
Hreflang is a tag on every page that tells Google which language versions belong together and for whom each one is meant. Done right, a French-speaking searcher sees your French page and an English searcher your English one. Common errors we find in audits:
- Tags that point one wayEvery version must refer to all the others, including itself. A French page that points to the English one, without the English page pointing back, is ignored.
- No x-defaultThe x-default tag says which version to show a searcher whose language you do not cover. Point it to your main language.
- Automatic redirects by browser languageSending a visitor to /fr because their browser is French can stop Google's crawler, which usually visits without a language preference, from seeing your French pages.
- Translated slugs that change laterPick the URLs per language once; changing them breaks the pairs.

Write for the commune, in both its names
Brussels buyers often search with their commune, and every commune has a French and a Dutch name. A local page should carry both, in the language of the page first.
| Commune, French | Dutch | Residents on 1 January 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Bruxelles | Brussel | 198,674 |
| Anderlecht | Anderlecht | 129,600 |
| Schaerbeek | Schaarbeek | 129,278 |
| Molenbeek-Saint-Jean | Sint-Jans-Molenbeek | 98,411 |
| Ixelles | Elsene | 89,162 |
| Uccle | Ukkel | 87,548 |
| Woluwe-Saint-Lambert | Sint-Lambrechts-Woluwe | 60,979 |
| Forest | Vorst | 58,904 |
The four largest communes hold more than 40 percent of the region's 1.26 million residents. A dentist in Uccle and a plumber in Schaerbeek are found by different searches; a page that only says "Brussels" competes with every company in the region. Write a page per commune only where you really work, with something true for that place: the streets you cover, how fast you get there, what clients there ask for.
The first three months
- Audit and foundation. One address per page, titles on search terms, speed, hreflang and a sitemap per language. Our SEO audit lists what is wrong; the SEO checker shows the first issues in a minute.
- A term map per language. Every term with proof that people in Belgium type it, on exactly one page per language.
- Pages per service and municipality. Brussels buyers often search with their commune: Ixelles, Uccle, Etterbeek, Woluwe. Write a page where you really work there, with something only true for that place.
- Business Profile. The right category, opening hours and a description in the language of most of your clients. See local SEO.
- Measure per language. Search Console filtered per folder, and leads tagged by the language of the page they came from.
SEO takes three to six months to settle; how long SEO takes explains why. What it costs in Belgium is in SEO cost.
How long it takes in each language
Rankings settle at a different pace per language. French terms in Brussels are the most contested, so French pages usually take longest. English pages for local services often move faster, because fewer companies write them well. Dutch pages for Brussels sit in between: less volume, but also little competition. Plan your writing in that order of return, not in the order of your org chart.
What you can do this week
- Check what Google suggests for your service plus 'bruxelles', 'brussel' and 'brussels'. That list shows where the demand is per language.
- Fix your titles. Each page title should name the service and the place, in the language of the page.
- Check your hreflang with a crawler or our SEO checker: every version should point to every other one.
One domain or three?
Your buyers in Brussels search in more than one language
- Separate brands per languageA domain per language
- 1Only if the names differ by language
- 2Each domain builds its own authority from zero
- 3Triple the work for links and reporting
- Buyers only in one languageOne language, done well
- 1Write for that buyer's terms
- 2Add a second language when sales show demand
- 3Keep the URL structure ready for /fr or /nl later

Questions from companies in Brussels
Should I start in French or in English?
In French if your clients are local companies or households, in English if they are international organisations or teams. Check per language which of your services Google suggests in Belgium; the larger list wins.
Can I rank in all three languages with one page?
No. A page ranks in the language it is written in. A mixed-language page ranks in none of them.
Is a .be domain better than a .com for Brussels?
For a company that sells in Belgium, a .be domain with a Belgian address and VAT number gives Google clear local signals. A .com works if you sell abroad as well; then the folders per language matter even more.
How do you measure SEO per language?
In Search Console per folder (/fr, /nl, /en) and in your own analytics by the language of the page a lead came from.
SEO
What VBS does for a Brussels company
We built and optimised sites in four languages: Dutch, French, English and Turkish for Business Centrum, and four-language sites for FK Boekhouding and K&A Law. For Business Centrum we wrote a term map with 182 terms, each on one target page, and pages per question, guide and city. In five weeks their impressions in Google grew from 220 to 10,200 a day, and non-brand terms on page one from 13 to 1,593. We do not promise that for Brussels; we bring the method.
We work from Ghent, under an hour from Brussels, in English when your team does. The service is described on SEO; if you also need campaigns and a new site, see our marketing agency for Brussels, and in Ghent our SEO agency in Ghent. You get a fixed price from us before work starts, per language you want written.
