Marketing agency in Hasselt

Local marketing: the owner of Park & Wash next to a car, in footage VBS shot for him

For shops and firms that speak to Hasselt, to Limburg and to the Netherlands, each in its own way.

Limburg's shopping city, thirty kilometres from Maastricht

A marketing agency in Hasselt works for businesses in the shopping city of Limburg. Hasselt had 90,914 residents on 1 January 2026, Kortessem included since the 2025 merger, but its shopping streets, restaurants and events draw visitors from all of Limburg and from Dutch Limburg. Maastricht is about thirty kilometres away.

This page is written for the owner who works in English: a shop or restaurant run by people who moved to Belgium, a firm on Corda Campus with an international team, a company whose head office sits abroad. Your customers speak Dutch, in two versions, and some of them English. Below: how to reach each of them, a worked example of a local campaign, the Belgian rules that touch your marketing, and what an agency costs.

Three rings around the Grote Markt

  1. CityHasselt and Kortessem, up to about 10 kilometres90,914residents on 1 January 2026Your profile, your opening hours and a reel a week. This is where the people live who walk in on an ordinary Tuesday.
  2. RegionGenk, Diepenbeek, Zonhoven, Lummen, Herk-de-Stad, up to about 25 kilometresSaturdaythe day the region comes to HasseltAds with a reason to make the trip: a collection, an offer, an event in the city.
  3. Across the borderSouth Limburg in the Netherlands, Maastricht at about 30 kilometresNLtheir own words, their own campaignA separate campaign in the Dutch of the Netherlands, with what a Dutch visitor looks for: parking, Sunday opening, what is different from home.

Residents of Hasselt including Kortessem, which merged in 2025. Distances as the crow flies, rounded.

Three audiences, three messages

AudienceWhat they look forWhere they see youWhat you tell them
People from Hasselta business close by, for every dayInstagram, Google Maps, the neighbourhoodnews from your place, your hours, a reason to come this week
Limburgers from the regiona reason to make the tripFacebook and Instagram within 25 kilometres, Googlea collection, an offer, an event in the city
Dutch visitors from South Limburgsomething they do not find at homeGoogle and Instagram, in their own wordsparking, opening hours, what is different from Maastricht

The last group has its own rule: write for them separately. A Dutch visitor searches 'winkelen hasselt' (shopping), 'parkeren hasselt centrum' (parking) or 'koopzondag hasselt' (Sunday shopping), and uses words a Belgian does not, such as 'pinnen' for paying by card. An ad in Belgian Dutch works less well in Maastricht than one in their own Dutch. Aim that campaign at Dutch towns and give it its own landing page.

Which language your customers speak

If you run your business in English, the first thing to settle is that almost none of your walk-in customers will. Hasselt shops in Dutch. Your posts, ads, menu and shop window speak to Flemish customers first, and an English line underneath reaches students and staff of the university and the international teams on Corda Campus.

A few rules apply to every Belgian business site, whatever its language: your company number on the site (company number on your website), prices for consumers including VAT, and consent before marketing cookies such as the Meta pixel (do I need a cookie banner).

A worked example for a local campaign

Take a clothes shop in the Demerstraat that wants more visitors on Saturday, with 900 euros a month for ads.

CampaignBudget per monthAimed atWhat you measure
Instagram and Facebook, reels of the new collection450 eurosHasselt and a 25-kilometre radius, ages 20 to 55profile visits, messages, route requests in Google Maps
Instagram, a separate series for Dutch visitors250 eurosMaastricht, Sittard-Geleen, Heerlen and aroundvisits to your page for Dutch visitors
Google Ads on your brand names and 'kledingwinkel hasselt'200 eurospeople searching in and around Hasseltclicks to your route, calls

After two months you know which campaign brings visitors. Ask at the till where new customers come from; it is the simplest measurement there is. What a click or reach on Meta costs is in Facebook ads cost. How Google Ads works for a business with a fixed area is in how does Google Ads work for local businesses; what a different budget gives you, work out with the Google Ads budget calculator.

The Hasseltbon and the city

With the Hasseltbon, the city's gift voucher, people pay in more than 200 shops and restaurants in Hasselt. They buy it from Visit Hasselt, on the city's site or in the MijnHasselt app. If you accept it, say so on your site, in your profile and in your posts around the holidays: someone who received a voucher looks for a place to spend it.

Plan your own campaigns around the moments when the city itself draws crowds: the shopping Sundays, the end-of-year season and the big events in the centre. An ad aimed at people nearby on that day costs little and brings visitors who are already in town.

Firms around Corda and the university

Hasselt is not only a shopping city. Around Corda Campus, the technology campus on the edge of the centre, and the university in Diepenbeek sit companies that sell to other companies, often across the Euregio of Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. For them, what counts is what counts for a knowledge firm in Leuven: a page per application, LinkedIn with faces, and search work in Dutch and English. More on that on our page about a marketing agency in Leuven.

A calendar for a Hasselt shop

PeriodWhat happens in the cityWhat you do
Januarysales, quiet weeks aftera reason to come after the sales, speak to regulars
March to Maynew collections, long weekendsreels of the collection, a campaign for Dutch visitors before the long weekends
July and Augustsales, tourists in the areayour hours in your profile, an offer for people on holiday nearby
September and Octobernew school year, new collectionsback to Hasselt and the region
November and Decemberyear-end, shopping Sundays, the Hasseltbon as a giftgifts and vouchers in the spotlight, holiday hours, ads in the last two weeks

That way you spread your budget over the year instead of spending it in one month. The weeks before the holidays are the most expensive for ads; start in November.

Hasselt searches by street

People who shop in Hasselt know the streets: the Demerstraat, the Hoogstraat, the Kapelstraat. Put your address and street clearly on your site and in your profile; a visitor from outside sometimes searches for the very street where they want to park or shop.

What an agency costs

Hasselt agencies charge what agencies elsewhere in Flanders charge; the ranges are in digital agency cost. For a local campaign like the one above, management comes on top of your ad budget. At VBS the price for management is fixed before the campaign starts, and the proposal can be in English.

Six mistakes of Hasselt businesses

  • All of Limburg with one messageSomeone from Hasselt and a visitor from Maaseik come for different reasons.
  • No separate campaign for the NetherlandsIf you want Dutch visitors, speak to them in their words, in their towns.
  • A profile with the wrong shopping SundaysVisitors from far away check your hours before they drive. Keep your Google Business Profile up to date.
  • Advertising without measuringAsk new customers where they found you, and look at route requests in Google Maps.
  • Ignoring reviewsA visitor from far away chooses on the map. Ask happy customers for a review with the Google review link generator; the rest of the work on the map is local SEO, and why Dutch businesses sometimes rank above you is on our page about an SEO agency for Limburg.
  • Posting without a planOne reel a week works better than five in one week and then nothing for a month. See social media management.

What VBS does for a Hasselt business

We make a plan per audience, film your place and your collection, run the campaigns on Facebook and Instagram and Google Ads, and measure what they bring in. For Park & Wash, a mobile car wash in Ghent, we built a site with two routes to a request and a Meta pixel that only measures after consent; see the case Park & Wash.

Our office is in Ghent, about an hour and a half by car from Hasselt. For a shoot day or a first meeting we come over; the rest happens online, in English or Dutch. A new site for your business: see web design in Hasselt. For the whole province: our marketing agency for Limburg.

Questions from Hasselt business owners

How do I reach Dutch visitors without wasting money?

With a separate campaign aimed at Dutch towns, in their own words, and its own landing page with what they want to know: parking, opening hours and what is different from home. Keep it apart from your Belgian campaign, so you see per country what a visitor costs.

I do not speak Dutch. Can I still run my marketing in Hasselt?

Yes. You brief us in English, we write and film in Dutch for your customers, and you approve each piece with an English summary next to it.

Is Instagram enough for a shop in Hasselt?

For visibility nearby, often yes, combined with a good Google Business Profile. People who see your shop on Instagram then look you up on Google Maps to check whether you are open.

Do you also work for businesses in Genk or Sint-Truiden?

Yes. For Belgian Limburg as a whole we wrote a separate page, with what differs per city.
