SEO in Limburg
SEO agency for Limburg businesses
Local SEO with a border: found in Hasselt, Genk and Sint-Truiden, not in Maastricht.

Why you see Dutch businesses
An SEO agency in Limburg makes sure your business shows up in Google when someone in your region looks for your service. In Limburg there is a problem the rest of Flanders does not have: the province shares its name with a Dutch province, and the border is close. Someone in Hasselt typing 'installer limburg' can see Dutch firms, and someone searching in Lanaken sees businesses from Maastricht next to those from their own town.
This page, written for owners and managers who work in English, explains how Google chooses which business to show, why a business in Belgian Limburg sometimes loses, and what to do about each cause. It also covers searching in Dutch versus English, and ends with the approach we took for a payroll office in East Flanders, without promising the same figures in Limburg.
How Google chooses which business to show
For local searches Google itself names three factors: relevance (do your profile and your site fit what someone is looking for), distance (how far your business is from the searcher or from the place in the search) and prominence (how well known and well rated you are, online and offline). In Limburg all three sometimes work against you.
| Factor | What Google looks at | Why a Limburg business loses | What you do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relevance | words on your site and in your profile, your category | you write 'Limburg' and Google does not know which one | write 'Belgian Limburg' and the names of your towns, pick the right category |
| Distance | where your business is compared with the searcher | in Lanaken or Maasmechelen, Maastricht is closer than Hasselt | make a page for each town you work in, with real work there |
| Prominence | reviews, mentions, links | Dutch competitors often have more reviews and links | ask for reviews, get mentioned by Limburg associations and partners |
| Country | language, domain, address | your site reads like the Dutch of the Netherlands | nl-BE as the language, Belgian words, address and company number visible |
The last row is not on Google's list, but it sits inside all three: a site that reads Belgian is more relevant for a Belgian searcher. On our page about a marketing agency in Limburg the signals that make a site read Belgian or Dutch are side by side.
What the search terms show
On 24 October 2026 we looked at which searches Google suggests in Belgium around SEO and marketing in Limburg. The figure below counts per search how often Google itself adds 'belgie' and how often it points to Dutch Limburg. Type 'seo limburg' and you get 'seo limburg belgie', but also 'seo agentur limburg', a German search. And 'seo hasselt' and 'seo genk' exist as searches of their own. In English the split is even sharper: on 25 October Google completed 'seo agency limburg' with 'belgium', 'belgie', 'netherlands' and 'nl', four suggestions for two countries.
The same goes for your own business. Search the words of your service plus 'limburg' and see what Google adds. If you see 'belgie', you know searchers have to be specific, and that a page which already is has a head start.
English or Dutch search terms
If your team works in English, it is tempting to optimise your site in English. Check first who searches for you. Local households and most local companies search in Dutch; international staff, researchers around the university and buyers abroad search in English.
| Who searches | In which language | What they type | Which page they need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Households in Hasselt or Genk | Dutch | 'warmtepomp genk', 'loodgieter hasselt' | a Dutch page per service and town |
| Expats and international staff | English | 'plumber hasselt', 'english speaking dentist genk' | an English page on the same service |
| Buyers abroad | English or German | the product or service, with 'belgium' | an English product page with specifications |
| Dutch customers across the border | the Dutch of the Netherlands | their own words and place names | a separate page written for them |
Each language version needs its own address, titles and descriptions, linked with hreflang so Google shows the right one. How that works on one domain is on multilingual website development.
A plan in five steps
- Baseline. Which terms you rank on now, with which page, and how many enquiries come from Google. An SEO audit lists it all.
- Belgian signals. Language set to nl-BE, Belgian words, address and company number, and a Google Business Profile with the same address.
- A page per service and per town. Only where you really work: an installer from Genk writes about Genk, As, Zutendaal and Maasmechelen, with work he did there.
- Reviews and mentions. Every happy client gets a request for a review; the Google review link generator makes a link and QR code. Mentions by Limburg associations, sports clubs and partners give Google local signals.
- Measure every month. Positions, impressions and enquiries per page, in Search Console and in your own forms.
Count on three to six months for stable positions; why it takes that long is in how long does SEO take.
The Business Centrum approach, without a promise
We have no client in Limburg. We did the same work for Business Centrum, a payroll office from Ghent with employers across East Flanders. We built a term map with 182 search terms, each on one target page, wrote thirteen city pages with their own local facts and connected everything with 771 internal links. In five weeks impressions in Google went from 220 to 10,200 a day, and search terms without the brand name on page 1 from 13 to 1,593. The site runs in four languages, English among them. That is no promise for Limburg: every market is different. It is the method we bring.
An example: an installer from Genk
Take an installer of heat pumps in Genk who also works in As, Zutendaal and Maasmechelen. Today he ranks on his name in Google, and hardly anything else; for 'warmtepomp limburg' he mostly sees Dutch installers.
| What he has | What he builds | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A homepage with everything on it | a page per service: heat pump, solar panels, ventilation | someone searching 'warmtepomp genk' wants a page about heat pumps |
| 'Active across Limburg' | a page per town with projects there | distance to the searcher counts |
| No address on the site | address, company number, nl-BE as the language | Belgian signals |
| Six reviews | a review request after every job | Dutch competitors often have dozens |
| No measuring | enquiries per page in Search Console and his form | knowing which page brings work |
After a few months he knows which town and which service bring in the most, and writes more about those.
What a Limburg town page should hold
A page for a town is only worth something when it says something that is only true there. For a business in Belgian Limburg that means: the work you did there, with photos and the street or district; how fast you get there; what clients there often ask; and the name of the town as residents use it, also for districts such as Waterschei or Zwartberg in Genk. A page that only swaps the town name is what Google ranks lower.
What SEO in Limburg costs
Belgian agencies usually charge 500 to 2,500 euros a month for SEO, and 500 to 2,500 euros one-off for an audit. What you may expect for that after a year is in SEO cost; a specialist by the hour you compare in SEO specialist hourly rate. With us you hear a fixed price for the pages and the measuring after a first conversation, and the conversation can be in English.
Four Limburg pitfalls
- One page for all of LimburgA searcher in Sint-Truiden wants to see Sint-Truiden, not the province.
- Copying texts from the NetherlandsA text from a Dutch supplier or a template made in the Netherlands brings Dutch words with it.
- Not asking for reviewsDutch competitors with a hundred reviews win the map pack from a Limburg business with ten.
- Only looking at positionsFirst place on a term nobody searches for brings nothing. Look at enquiries.
Want to know where you stand today? Search your service plus your town in a private window, note who is in the map pack and which country they are from, and repeat that every month.

How we start for a Limburg business
We start with a list of the search terms your clients in Limburg use, with proof from Google, in Dutch and, where your buyers need it, in English, and with a look at the signals your site gives now. Then you see per term which page we build or rewrite, and per town which work we show.
Our approach is on SEO and local SEO. A new site for your business: see web design in Limburg. If you work mostly in Hasselt, read about our marketing agency in Hasselt too.
Questions about SEO in Limburg
Should I put 'belgium' in my titles?
Only where it reads naturally, such as 'installer in Belgian Limburg'. More important are the names of your towns, your address and Belgian words in your text.
Does a .be domain help?
It helps, but it is not enough. A .be site with Dutch words from the Netherlands and no address still reads Dutch. Together with your profile, your address and Belgian place names it makes the difference.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no fixed number. Look at the businesses now in the map pack for your service and your town; if you clearly have fewer, that is the first thing to work on.
Is an English site enough for an international business in Genk?
Only if your clients are international too. If local companies or households buy from you, they search in Dutch, and you need Dutch pages to be found by them.
