One province, four markets

A marketing agency in West Flanders works not for one market but for four. At the coast everything turns on the season and on second-home owners. Bruges lives off millions of visitors and a city of 120,000 people. In the centre, around Roeselare and Tielt, food and manufacturing firms sell to buyers. And in the south, around Kortrijk, Waregem and Menen, companies sell across the language border and into northern France.

What a West Flanders business asks of an agency depends on where it sits and who it sells to. This page is for businesses that work in English: a hotel or guesthouse run by people from abroad, a firm in the Westhoek that serves British visitors, a plant owned by a foreign group. Per zone you read which channel brings in most, which languages your customers speak, how West Flanders looks for an agency, what the province and the cities do for entrepreneurs, and what an agency costs.

Four zones, four kinds of marketing

  1. CoastOstend, Knokke-Heist, De Panne, NieuwpoortJulypeak month for hospitality and rentalsGoogle Business Profile and search for people already at the sea, ads for people planning a stay. In winter: the second-home owners.
  2. Bruges and aroundBruges, Damme, Oostkamp, Jabbeke6.9 mlnday visitors in Bruges in 2024Two audiences: tourists in season, locals outside it. A site in several languages pays off fastest here.
  3. CentreRoeselare, Tielt, Izegem, TorhoutB2Bfood, machinery, agricultureBuyers search by product and specification. Product pages, LinkedIn and fairs at Kortrijk Xpo carry the most.
  4. South and borderKortrijk, Waregem, Menen, WervikFRclients across the language border and in northern FranceSearch in Dutch and French, ads aimed at northern France, fairs as fixed moments.

A different plan per zone

South: Kortrijk, Waregem, MenenB2B clients, clients across the language border and in northern Francesearch in Dutch and French, fairs at Kortrijk Xpo, ads aimed at FranceFrench clients with a Dutch site

The zones run into each other. A baker in Torhout has more in common with the coast than with Kortrijk; a machine builder in Waregem more with Roeselare than with Bruges. Start with your clients, not with the map.

We wrote a page of its own for each city: marketing agency in Bruges on tourists and locals, marketing agency in Kortrijk on fairs and export, marketing agency in Roeselare on manufacturers and the centre, and SEO in Kortrijk on being found in two languages.

Which language your customers speak

West Flanders speaks Dutch, with a dialect of its own that locals are proud of. But the people who buy from a West Flanders business speak many languages, and the mix differs per zone.

ZoneMain languages of your customersWhat that asks of you
CoastDutch, French from Brussels and Wallonia, GermanDutch and French pages, a German page for rentals
BrugesEnglish, French, German, Dutch, Spanisha site in the languages of your largest guest groups
WesthoekEnglish and French for visitors, Dutch for localsEnglish pages for the visitors from the UK and further
Centre and southDutch for local clients, French and English for buyersproduct pages in the buyers' language

Whatever language your customers speak, a few Belgian rules apply in every zone: your company number on your site (company number on your website), consumer prices including VAT, product labels and manuals at least in Dutch when you sell in Flanders, and Dutch for the employment documents of staff in Flanders. And if you run an online shop or booking flow, check whether the European Accessibility Act applies to you.

How West Flanders looks for an agency

In Google's suggestions in Belgium, 'marketingbureau west vlaanderen' and 'communicatiebureau west vlaanderen' rank high; 'reclamebureau west vlaanderen' and 'seo bureau west vlaanderen' exist too. In English, 'marketing agency west flanders' is suggested, and Google often turns it into 'marketing agency west vlaanderen'. But most people in West Flanders search on their city: for Bruges, Kortrijk and Roeselare, 'marketing agency' plus the city comes first. A province page helps anyone who serves the whole province; a city page helps anyone who sells locally. The same goes for your company: a contractor who works across West Flanders needs a page per region, not a list of seventy towns at the bottom.

What the province and the cities do

POM West-Vlaanderen, the province's development agency, supports local business: it promotes shopping in your own town, works with retail coaches together with KERNpunt and maps data on shopping centres for local authorities. On 28 and 29 October 2026 POM is at the Bedrijvencontactdagen business fair in Bruges with the project Unlocking Digital Potential, together with the universities of applied sciences Howest and VIVES, for small businesses that want to digitalise.

The cities themselves mostly pay towards opening a business or strengthening a shopping street, not towards your marketing:

CityWhat it pays
Brugesactions of shopping street associations: 500 euros for a customer event, 2,000 to 4,000 euros for a street market, up to 3,000 euros for a new initiative
Kortrijkan attraction grant of 2,500 to 10,000 euros for a new shop in a shopping centre, and up to 1,000 euros per project for street associations
Roeselare10,000 euros for a new shop and 5,000 euros for hospitality in the main shopping area, and a restyling grant of 25 percent

The details per city are on the city pages above; what Flanders funds for digital projects is in Flanders digitalisation grants.

The Westhoek and the coast in winter

Two parts of the province fall outside the big cities. The Westhoek, around Ieper (Ypres) and Poperinge, lives off remembrance tourism and visitors from the United Kingdom and abroad. If you run a business there, write in English and French for those visitors, and plan around the commemorations. The coast has a second audience that is often forgotten: the owners of a second home, who come outside the season too, and the residents who live there all year.

AudienceWhenWhat they look for
Visitors to the Westhoekall year, with peaks around commemorationsguides, food, a place to stay, in English and French
Second-home owners at the seaweekends and holidays, in winter toomaintenance, renovation, restaurants that are open
Residents at the coastall yearthe same services as elsewhere, but close by

A contractor in Knokke-Heist or a cleaning company in De Haan often finds more work with second-home owners than with tourists. A page saying that you handle keys and maintenance for owners who do not live there speaks to that group directly, and many of them read English, French or German more easily than Dutch.

Where to start

  1. Pick the zone where you have the most clients and write for it first.
  2. Put your profile in order, with the right category, hours for the season and recent photos.
  3. Plan your campaigns for your peak, but start one to three months before, depending on how far ahead your clients decide.
  4. Measure per zone how many enquiries or bookings each region brings, and move your budget to what works.

What an agency costs

West Flanders agencies charge what agencies elsewhere in Flanders charge: SEO 800 to 2,000 euros a month, Google Ads management 500 to 1,500 euros, full service 2,000 to 5,000 euros, without ad budget and without VAT. The ranges and what they include are in digital agency cost. What it costs with us you hear after a first conversation, as a fixed price for the whole plan, in English or Dutch.

Four West Flanders mistakes

  • A seasonal business that starts in the seasonIf you start advertising in July, you miss the guests who booked in March.
  • A province page instead of work per regionA client in Ieper wants to see that you work in the Westhoek, not that you serve 'all of West Flanders'.
  • No French in the southIn Menen, Wervik and Kortrijk part of your clients speak French.
  • A profile without reviewsIn smaller towns a client often chooses between two or three businesses on the map. Reviews decide; see local SEO.

What VBS does for a West Flanders company

We start with your clients and your zone, build or rewrite the pages they look for and run the campaigns at the moments that count in your zone. The same team builds the site and measures what each page and campaign brought in.

We are in Ghent: Kortrijk is about 35 minutes away, Bruges 45, Ostend 47 and Roeselare 55 minutes by car. We work with you in English or Dutch and write your pages in the languages your clients read. For a new site, see web design in West Flanders; our approach per channel is on SEO and social media management.

Questions from West Flanders business owners

Do I need a page per town?
Only for the towns where you really did work or have clients. A page per region, such as the coast, the Westhoek or the Kortrijk region, is a better start for many businesses than seventy town pages.
Which channel works best at the coast?
For people already at the sea: your Google Business Profile and search on your service plus the town. For people planning a stay: ads on Instagram and Facebook in the months before the season.
Should a guesthouse in the Westhoek have an English site?
If a large part of your guests come from the UK or further, yes, and as a version written for them, not a translate button. French helps for visitors from Wallonia and France.
Do you work for businesses in the Westhoek too?
Yes. Ieper is about an hour from our office in Ghent. For a shoot day or a first meeting we come over.
