Belgian Limburg, not South Limburg

This page is about web design in Limburg in Belgium: Hasselt, Genk, Sint-Truiden, Lommel and the rest of the province. We say so straight away, because Google mixes the two Limburgs. In Dutch, type 'website laten maken limburg' and Google suggests 'belgie' and 'zuid limburg'; in English, 'web design limburg' and 'website design limburg' both come back with 'limburg belgie'. Someone in Maastricht or Heerlen partly gets the same results as someone in Hasselt looking for a web designer.

For a Limburg business that has two consequences. Your titles and texts must make clear that you are in Belgian Limburg, with your town and municipality. And if you are close to the border, in Lommel, Pelt or Maasmechelen, you often have Dutch customers too, who use slightly different words.

This page is written for businesses that work in English: a firm on Corda Campus with an international team, a plant with a foreign owner, an expat who opened a practice in Hasselt or a restaurant in Genk. Most of your customers search in Dutch; part of them in English.

The province in figures

At the end of 2025, 95,071 companies had their seat in the province of Limburg. In 2025, 9,080 started and 8,269 stopped.

Companies in Limburg, end of 2025Number
Professional and technical services17,446
Construction14,769
Trade and car repair14,398
Other services, from hairdresser to beauty salon7,827
Administrative services5,987

Hospitality5,033

Construction is second in Limburg, with almost as many firms as trade. In towns such as Beringen and Maasmechelen it is even the largest sector. A contractor needs other pages than a shop: projects per town, a request with photos, a first price. What such a site looks like is on website for contractors.

Belgian Limburg, town by town

  • Hasselt90,914 residents, Corda Campus with more than 250 companies. A site that competes across the province, not just in the city.
  • GenkAbout 100 nationalities. One extra language can double your circle of customers.
  • Sint-TruidenFruit country, 318 farms. Season, farm and farm-gate sales on your site.
  • Lommel13.87 percent Dutch nationals. A site that speaks to Dutch and Flemish customers, each in their own words.
  • BeringenConstruction is the largest sector, 937 companies. Projects with village and date.
  • MaasmechelenMaasmechelen Village draws visitors from far away. Hours, route and information in several languages.
  • PeltA border town with the Netherlands. The same question as Lommel: who types which Dutch here?
  • Tongeren-BorgloonOne municipality since 2025. Old and new names together on your site.

Hasselt and Genk: two cities, two kinds of site

Hasselt is the capital of the province, with 90,914 residents, Corda Campus with more than 250 companies, and the university. A business in Hasselt competes in Google with the whole province: whoever types 'webdesign hasselt' also sees agencies from Genk and Sint-Truiden. What that means for your site and your price is on web design in Hasselt.

Genk is different. With about 100 nationalities it is one of the most mixed cities in Flanders. For a hairdresser, a baker or a garage in Genk a second language, such as Turkish or Italian, can bring more customers than any ad. How to do that without a translated site nobody maintains is on web design in Genk.

Which languages your site needs

Who your customers areLanguageWhat to build
Households and companies in LimburgBelgian Dutchyour main site, on Belgian search terms
Dutch customers across the borderthe Dutch of the Netherlandsa separate version only if prices or terms differ
International staff, researchers, expatsEnglishan English version of the pages they need: services, prices, contact
Communities in GenkTurkish, Italian or another home languageone page or a section, written by someone who speaks it

A few rules apply in every language. Your site shows your company name, address, company number and email (company number on your website); prices for consumers include VAT; marketing cookies need consent first (do I need a cookie banner). No law requires Dutch on a private business website in Flanders, but documents for your staff are in Dutch under the Flemish language decree, and labels of products you sell are at least in Dutch.

At the border: Dutch and Flemish customers on one site

In Lommel 13.87 percent of residents have Dutch nationality. In Pelt, Hamont-Achel and Maasmechelen Dutch shoppers come in every day. For a business in those towns the question is not whether you have Dutch customers, but whether your site speaks to them.

  • Choose a site in Flemish Dutch ifyour Dutch customers mostly visit your shop or business, and your Belgian prices apply. A visitor from Eindhoven or Weert usually understands a Flemish text fine.
  • Choose a separate version for the Netherlands ifyou deliver in the Netherlands, use other prices or terms there, or your Dutch customers search with other words. An 'offerte' (quote) and a 'gsm' (mobile phone) are often called something else there, and a Belgian VAT rule is wrong on their invoice.
  • Link both versions with hreflang ifyou build two. With nl-BE and nl-NL you tell Google which version belongs to which reader, so the two do not compete. How that works is under hreflang and on our page on multilingual website development.

Local support running now

No Limburg town pays for your website directly, but a few towns support people opening a business. Two examples running now:

TownWhatFor whomHow long
LommelLommel loont, a starter grant of up to 8,000 eurosanyone opening a business in the centreuntil 31 December 2026
Genkgrant for commercial premises, 50 percentanyone filling or improving a shop unitthe scheme ends in 2026
Maasmechelenimproving shop frontswas there for tradersstopped

Always check the conditions with the town itself before you sign for premises or plan a renovation. An opening often coincides with a new site: if you open in Lommel with the starter grant, you want to be in Google on day one too. Which support Flanders gives for digital projects is in Flanders digitalisation grants.

Four things that make a Limburg site stronger

  1. Your town in your titles, not just 'Limburg'. Someone searching in Bilzen wants a tradesman from Bilzen or nearby.
  2. Projects with place and date. A bathroom in Houthalen in March 2026 says more than ten photos without a word.
  3. A Google Business Profile that is right. Hours, category and photos; see create a Google Business Profile and get more Google reviews.
  4. A site that opens fast on a phone. Test it with the website speed test and, if Google does not show you, with the website not showing on Google check.

What local findability asks in general is under local SEO.

What a Limburg business spends on a site

A simple page with who you are and how to reach you costs 500 to 1,500 euros on the Belgian market. A page per service costs more like 2,000 to 6,000 euros, and a shop that sells online 4,000 to 15,000 euros or more, all excluding VAT. A separate version for the Netherlands or in English comes on top as translation of words and terms, not as a second site.

From Ghent to Limburg

Between our office on the Sint-Baafsplein and Hasselt lie 136 kilometres, a good hour and a half by car; Genk is a quarter of an hour further. For Limburg businesses we therefore mostly work remotely: a first meeting by video, in English or Dutch, a test address where you see the site grow, comments per page. For photos of your business and your team we drive over for a day.

We have no client in Limburg, and we would rather say so. What we can show: the four-language site of Business Centrum, English included, which appeared 46 times as often in Google within five weeks, and the four-language site of No.4 Lange Ast, with guests from the Netherlands, France and Germany. How we work is at website design.

Limburg questions about web design

Who builds a website for a business in Belgian Limburg?
A local web designer, an agency from Hasselt or Genk, or an agency from outside the province that works remotely, such as VBS from Ghent. Look mostly at sites the agency already built and at what the quote lists.
Does my site need to work for Dutch customers?
If you are in Lommel, Pelt, Hamont-Achel or Maasmechelen, you almost certainly have Dutch customers. Usually a clear Flemish site is enough. If you deliver in the Netherlands or other prices apply, a separate version with hreflang pays off.
Can my Limburg site be in English only?
It may, but you will miss most local customers, who search in Dutch. An English site with Dutch pages for the services local buyers look for reaches both.
Is there a grant for a website in Limburg?
Not directly. Lommel and Genk support people opening a business or filling premises, but do not pay for a website. Check the conditions with your town.
Do you come to Limburg?
Yes, for photos and if you prefer the first meeting on site. The rest of the work happens remotely, with a test address and comments per page.
