An SEO specialist in Belgium charges 60 to 120 euros an hour as a freelancer or consultant, and a senior consultant at an agency 750 to 1,500 euros a day, roughly 94 to 188 euros an hour, all before VAT. Across Europe, consultancy runs from 75 to more than 250 euros an hour, with the UK and Germany at the top and Central Europe at the bottom. Worldwide, the largest group of SEO providers charges 75 to 100 dollars an hour. The rate a Belgian freelancer needs for a given net income is in the freelance rate calculator.
The hourly rate is still the worst way to choose an SEO specialist. Ten hours of reporting and ten hours of building a page cost the same, but only the second brings visitors. This guide lines up the rates, works out what a fixed budget buys, shows how many hours common jobs take, and ends with the questions to ask before you hire. Belgium, where we work, is the reference point; the other markets sit next to it.
SEO specialist hourly rates by type
| Who | Hourly rate | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Junior or low-cost freelancer | under 60 euros | Execution of a plan someone else made |
| Experienced freelancer or consultant, Belgium | 60 to 120 euros | Audit, keyword research, advice and execution by one person |
| SEO agency, Belgium | 45 to 135 euros for most | A team, with technique, writing and measurement in one hand |
| Senior agency consultant, Belgium | 750 to 1,500 euros a day, about 94 to 188 an hour | Strategy, migrations, large sites, a second opinion |
| Consultancy across Europe | 75 to more than 250 euros | Higher in the UK and Germany, lower in Poland and the region |
| Global average | freelancers 71.59, agencies 98.90, consultancies 171.18 dollars | 90 percent of providers at 150 dollars or less |
Of the Belgian SEO agencies that show a rate, roughly half sit below 90 euros an hour and half above.

Why an hourly rate is a poor yardstick for SEO
- Hours say nothing about resultsTen hours of reporting and ten hours of building a page cost the same. Only the second brings visitors.
- A fast specialist may cost more per hourSomeone who finds a technical fault in one hour costs less than someone who takes five hours at half the rate.
- SEO compoundsA page that ranks on the right term today still works next year. You pay for the hour once; the visitors keep coming.
- Cheap hours abroad, expensive pages at homeA rate from a lower-cost market looks good until every text needs a native editor before it can go live.
How many hours an SEO job takes
The hours below are our own estimate for a business site of twenty to fifty pages, with four hours per finished text. Multiply by your specialist's rate and you know roughly what a job costs.
| Job | Hours, our estimate | At 60 euros an hour | At 120 euros an hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical check with a list of fixes | 6 to 10 | 360 to 600 | 720 to 1,200 |
| Keyword research for one service or region | 4 to 8 | 240 to 480 | 480 to 960 |
| One new page on a search term, writing and publishing | 4 | 240 | 480 |
| Rewriting ten existing pages | 15 to 25 | 900 to 1,500 | 1,800 to 3,000 |
| Guiding a move to a new site | 10 to 20 | 600 to 1,200 | 1,200 to 2,400 |
| Monthly report with explanation | 1 to 3 | 60 to 180 | 120 to 360 |
The expensive items are not the technical hours but the pages. Four new pages a month means at least sixteen hours, before anything is measured or adjusted. You can start a technical check yourself with the SEO checker and the website speed test. A move without SEO guidance often costs more than the hours themselves: read moving a website to a new host first.
Worked example: 1,000 euros a month
Our own worked example, before VAT:
- At 60 euros an hour you buy about 16.5 hours. That is four new pages and a short report.
- At 120 euros an hour you buy about 8 hours. That is two pages, or one technical check.
- A senior at 1,500 euros a day gives you just over five hours. Enough for a strategy, not for execution.
- A Belgian specialist billing a business in another EU country charges no Belgian VAT; the reverse charge applies and you settle VAT at home.
The same 1,000 euros buys between one and four pages a month. That is why output compares better than the hour. What a full monthly retainer costs is in how much does SEO cost.
Worked example: moving to a new site
A second worked example. A construction firm replaces its forty-page site and wants to keep its positions in Google. A specialist lists every old address, maps each to a new one, checks titles and text on the new site and follows indexing for the first weeks. Count on 15 hours: 900 euros at 60 an hour, 1,800 euros at 120. Without that work the new site costs nothing extra, but every old page that disappears without a redirect loses what it had built up in Google. A migration is one of the few jobs where an hourly rate works well: defined, with a clear end.
Buying hours against buying work
The same budget, agreed in two ways.
- What you agree on
- By the hourA number of hours
- Monthly, with agreed outputA number of pages per language, a technical base, a report
- Who carries the risk
- By the hourYou: if a task runs over, you pay more
- Monthly, with agreed outputThe specialist: if a page runs over, that is their time
- What you can compare
- By the hourPrice per hour, which says little
- Monthly, with agreed outputPrice per page that goes live
- Good for
- By the hourA technical question, a migration, a second opinion
- Monthly, with agreed outputA site that has to grow month after month
Buy hours for a defined question. Buy output when you want growth.
Which SEO specialist fits your question
SEO is not one trade but four or five. When you hire by the hour, pick someone strong in exactly your problem.
- Technical SEOSpeed, indexing, redirects, structured data, migrations. Here a higher rate pays off most: an experienced specialist finds in an hour what takes a junior a day.
- Keywords and contentWhich questions your customers ask, which page belongs to which term, and what goes on that page. This is most of the work on a business site, and the part best agreed per page.
- Local SEOYour Google Business Profile, reviews, city pages. For a trade or a practice often the fastest win; see get more Google reviews and local SEO.
- Visibility in AI assistantsHow ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers read and cite your business. A young field: ask for concrete work, not a branded method. The difference with classic SEO is in SEO vs GEO.
- Links and mentionsOther sites pointing to yours. Buying links per piece breaks Google's rules; earning mentions with content or press does not.
When paying by the hour is the right choice
Hours work well when the job has a clear start and end. Four cases where we would advise a client to buy hours rather than a retainer:
- A migration or redesign. Defined scope, a clear deadline, and a measurable result: no traffic lost.
- A sudden drop. After a Google update, such as the March 2026 core update, you want someone to look at your data quickly and tell you what changed.
- A second opinion. You have a proposal or an audit and want an independent read before you sign.
- Training your team. A workshop for the people who will write and publish, so that the basics are right from the first page.
For everything that should grow month after month, such as new pages on new terms, agree on output instead of hours.
Freelancer, agency or a specialist abroad
- Hire a freelancerfor a defined job: an audit, keyword research, a second opinion on a proposal, a migration.
- Hire an agencyif your site must grow month after month, in more than one language, with technique, writing and measurement in one hand. The hour costs more, but you do not pay three parties to coordinate.
- Hire abroadfor technical work if you like; for texts rarely. A writer who does not know your market and language targets the wrong terms, and you pay a second time to fix it. What agencies charge across Europe is in digital marketing agency cost, and how developer rates compare in web developer hourly rate.
Pitfalls when you pay an SEO specialist by the hour
- No ceilingAgree a maximum number of hours per job, and ask to be warned before it is reached.
- Hours without a logAsk each month which pages were added or changed, not only how many hours were billed.
- A specialist without accessWithout access to your site and Search Console it stays advice. Arrange it up front, and keep the access in your name.
- Ranking promisesSomeone billing by the hour who promises a position in Google promises something they do not control.
- Texts nobody checksA four-hour text that does not match what you sell costs more than four hours. Review everything before it goes live.
Six questions before you hire an SEO specialist
- Which job will you do, and what is the maximum number of hours?
- What will be online or changed on my site after those hours?
- Will you work in my site yourself, or hand a list to my developer?
- Do I get access to everything you set up, in my name?
- Who checks the texts against what I actually sell, in my language?
- Is your rate with or without VAT, and are tools billed separately?
