Web design Mechelen

Website design in Mechelen

A site people in Mechelen find, even when Google shows them Antwerp or Brussels first.

Website design with local depth: the English key figures page on business-centrum.be, every number with its source, a site we built in four languages

Mechelen sits in the middle, and Google shows it

Website design in Mechelen means building for a city that falls between two big neighbours in Google.

Mechelen has 90,355 residents and lies roughly halfway between Antwerp and Brussels, a quarter of an hour from one by IC train and some twenty minutes from the other. Telenet, De Lijn and Alken-Maes have their head office there. At the end of 2025, 8,836 companies had their seat in the city, and 937 started in 2025. That position draws commuters and expats who work in Brussels or Antwerp and live in Mechelen, and tech firms that hire internationally. Clients come from two directions, and sometimes in three languages. But whoever types 'webdesigner mechelen' or 'kapper mechelen' often also sees businesses from Antwerp or Brussels, because they have more pages, more reviews and more links. This page, written for businesses that work in English, says how a Mechelen business rises above that, which languages to offer, what the city offers, what a site costs and how we approach it from Ghent.

Striking: with 961 companies in information and communication, Mechelen has relatively more tech firms than most Flemish cities its size. Those are companies that see their site not as a business card, but as the first thing a client or candidate reads.

Why a Mechelen business disappears in Antwerp results

Google picks local results on three things: how close you are to the searcher, how well your page fits the question, and how well known you are. On distance a Mechelen business always beats an Antwerp one, for someone in Mechelen. But on the other two it often loses: an Antwerp agency has more pages, more reviews and more links. Then it moves up, also for people searching in Mechelen.

You can do something about that, without a big budget:

  • A page per service, with Mechelen in it where it fitsNot 'services' as a list, but a page per question your client types, with your address and the work you did in Mechelen.
  • A complete Google Business ProfileThe right category, your hours, photos of your business and replies to reviews; our guide create a Google Business Profile walks through it step by step.
  • Reviews that keep comingHappy customers in Mechelen say so at the bar but rarely on Google; the Google review link generator makes asking easy. What is and is not allowed is in get more Google reviews.
  • The villages where you workHeffen, Hombeek, Leest, Muizen and Walem sometimes search with their own name. Put those village names with the work you really did there, so they prove something.

Together that is what we call local SEO. If you want to know why Google does not show you now, start with the website not showing on Google check.

An English question page on business-centrum.be, one of the pages per question and per city we wrote for that site

Thirteen cities, each with a page that says something

For Business Centrum, a payroll office from Ghent, we wrote a page per city in East Flanders, in four languages: which employers are there, which sectors are strong, how far the office is and what employers there ask. Not a page with only another place name, but a page with figures and answers for that city.

The result: from 220 to 10,200 impressions a day in five weeks. Business Centrum is in Ghent, not Mechelen. But a Mechelen business with clients in Antwerp, Lier or Willebroek can work the same way.

What a Mechelen business can do tomorrow

Three things cost nothing and help at once. Search for yourself on your main service plus 'mechelen' and note who ranks above you and why: more pages, more reviews, a complete profile. Then compare your own Google profile with those of the top three: category, photos, hours, replies to reviews. And check whether your site has its own page for every service, with Mechelen in it where it fits.

What you learn from that sets the order. If pages are missing, start with the site. If your profile is off, start there. Having a site built without that comparison is guessing at what Google misses.

Tech companies that hire

With 961 companies in information and communication, Mechelen is a city where software, telecom and media work, around Telenet's head office and in the business parks along the ring road. For such a company the site is mostly where candidates land. A careers page with what you build, with whom, which tools you use and how an application goes does more than a vacancy on a job site. If you hire in English, put that page in English too, and remember that the contracts your staff sign in Flanders follow the Flemish language decree: Dutch, with a translation where needed.

Visitors to St Rumbold's

Mechelen also draws day visitors, for the tower, the museums and the Dijle. Restaurants and shops in the centre gain from a short English and French page with hours, menu and route.

Two or three languages in Mechelen?

Mechelen is in Flanders, but Brussels is close and many people in Mechelen work there. For most local businesses a Dutch site is enough. A French or English version pays off in three cases.

ChooseWhenWhat it takes
A French versionyour customers come from Brussels, or your B2B clients have French-speaking buyersits own pages, titles and forms in French
An English versionyou work in tech, hire internationally, or serve many expats and tourists around the Grote Markt and St Rumbold's Towerits own pages on English search terms
Dutch onlyyour customers mostly come from Mechelen and the surrounding townsmore pages instead of more languages

In English, Google shows the demand: 'website design mechelen' comes back with 'belgium' and 'belgie' added, and 'web designer mechelen' with 'belgie'. If you want more languages, first read our page on multilingual website development: every language is its own version with its own titles, linked with hreflang. In every version your site shows the company name, address, company number and email (company number on your website).

What Mechelen offers entrepreneurs

The city says it itself: Mechelen has no starter grants. What it does have:

MeasureWhat it isFor whom
MESTtesting an empty shop unit for a while before you commitanyone who wants to try out a shop or concept
Exemption from the promotion taxa year without the city's tax on advertisingnew shops

None of those measures pays for a website. Which support Flanders does give is in Flanders digitalisation grants; note that the SME wallet stops on 1 January 2027.

From Ghent for a Mechelen business

Mechelen is 79 kilometres from the Sint-Baafsplein, an hour by car; the train takes a little less. We meet online or at your business, in English or Dutch, take photos on site, and the site grows on a test address until you approve it for launch.

We have no clients in Mechelen. Our proof comes from work that runs the same way: the local pages for Business Centrum, the calculator of SN Group that gives visitors a price themselves, and the 1,700 pages we have put online for our clients. What you get from us is at website design. If you also have clients in Antwerp, read web design in Antwerpen; for Brussels, web design in Brussels.
