Can AI build a website? Yes: tools such as Lovable, Bolt and the AI features of website builders produce a working site within minutes, from a few dollars a month. For a first version, a test or a simple site for a new idea, that is fast and cheap. If your site must rank in Google, work in several languages, handle enquiries securely and last for years, you need someone who understands what the AI built and can carry it on.
Below: how it works, what it costs, what you do and do not get, and when a builder is the better route. All prices in dollars and before tax.
Two kinds of AI tools for websites
AI website builders create a first version inside a classic website builder from your answers: template, colours, copy. You then edit in the editor. Wix, Squarespace and Hostinger do this. Your site stays on their platform, like any site on a builder; see Wix or WordPress and Webflow or WordPress.
AI code builders such as Lovable and Bolt write real code from a plain-language description. You ask for "a site for a plumber in Manchester with a quote form", and the tool builds pages, buttons and a form, with a database behind it if you ask. The code is yours and can be downloaded. The result often looks polished straight away. The difference sits in what you do not see.
What does it cost to build a website with AI?
| Tool | Kind | Price per month | What comes with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lovable Free | AI code builder | 0 dollars | 5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month, publishing on lovable.app |
| Lovable Pro | AI code builder | 25 dollars, or 250 dollars a year billed yearly | From 100 credits, custom domain, code download |
| Lovable Business | AI code builder | from 50 dollars | Your data excluded from AI training by default |
| Bolt Pro | AI code builder | 18 dollars billed yearly | 10 million tokens, custom domain |
| Hostinger Premium | AI website builder | 2.49 dollars introductory, 10.99 on renewal | 48 months paid up front |
| WordPress.com Personal | Website builder | 4 dollars billed yearly | Custom domain, plugins only on higher plans |
Credits are the catch: every request to the AI costs credits, and a site you steer twenty times burns through them. On Lovable, hosting and database usage are also paid in separate credits once you exceed what is included. Compare Lovable vs WordPress too.

What you see, and what sits underneath
What you see
Pages, buttons and a form. Often polished straight away.
What you do not see
- CopyAn AI writes what is right on average, so what is on every other site.
- Search termsA beautiful homepage without a page per service is rarely found.
- Code nobody knowsEvery new request to the AI can break something else.
- A form that worksUntil it quietly stops sending mail, and nobody notices.
- Security and privacyPersonal data and a login that have to be properly locked down.
Where it goes wrong
A page Google sees as empty
This is the trap most AI sites fall into. Until May 2026, Lovable built React apps by default that render in the browser: the server sends an almost empty page and JavaScript fills it afterwards. Google can usually read that, though not always right away, and many other crawlers, including those of AI assistants, see an empty page. New Lovable projects have used server-side rendering by default since 13 May 2026; older projects have to be converted. Why that matters is in what is technical SEO. Check your own site with the SEO checker.
Copy that sounds like everyone else
An AI writes what is right on average. Google and your buyers notice. You do not stand out with "quality and service are central to everything we do". You stand out with what you actually do, for whom and at what price.
No search terms
An AI builder does not know what your buyers search for unless you tell it. A beautiful homepage without a page per service is rarely found; what a good page carries is in what does an SEO specialist do. How visibility in AI assistants works: how to get found in ChatGPT.
Code nobody knows
The site runs until you want to change something the AI understood differently. Every new request can break something else. If nobody reads the code, you only notice a form stopped sending mail when the clients stay away.
Security, privacy and where your data lives
A contact form processes personal data, and a login has to be properly locked down. An AI builds what you ask, but does not check whether it holds up against abuse. On Lovable you choose once in which region your database lives (Americas, Europe or Asia Pacific), and you cannot change it afterwards. For a company serving EU customers, choose Europe deliberately. You need a privacy notice either way.
Worked example: AI yourself or a custom site
A company wants an eight-page site with a quote form. It compares three routes over the first year, before tax.
| Item | Lovable Pro, yourself | Lovable, then reviewed by a builder | Custom site from VBS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tool or build | 250 dollars (yearly plan) | 250 dollars plus a review by the hour | from 1,500 euros, usually more for eight pages |
| Your own hours | 20 to 40 hours prompting, testing, writing | 10 to 20 hours | a few calls and feedback |
| Copy on search terms | yourself | yourself or written for you | included |
| SEO basics and speed | check yourself | reviewed | included |
| What remains after a year | a site you maintain, on a subscription | the same, with less risk | a site that is yours, no subscription |
Count forty of your own hours at the rate of your own work and AI is rarely as cheap as the tool. What developers charge per country: web developer hourly rate.
When AI is a good idea
| Situation | AI yourself | A builder |
|---|---|---|
| You are testing a new idea and want to see if there is interest | Yes, fast and cheap | Not yet needed |
| You want a first design to show a builder what you mean | Yes, as a sketch | He builds it properly afterwards |
| A site for an event or a short campaign | Yes | Only if it must be found |
| Your company site that must bring in enquiries | As a first version | Yes, for copy, SEO and the technical side |
| A site with payments, logins or customer data | No, unless reviewed | Yes |

Improving your AI site: five steps
- Check that your text is in the HTML. Open the page source: if you see your copy, every search engine can read it.
- Give every service its own page with its own title and search term.
- Rewrite the copy with what you really do, your prices, your market and your clients.
- Test your form with a real enquiry and check the email arrives.
- Put domain and accounts in your own name and note where your database lives.

Questions about AI-built websites
Can AI build a whole website?
Yes. AI website builders and tools such as Lovable and Bolt produce a working site from a description within minutes. For a site that must be found and last for years, you still need someone to review the content and the code.
How much does it cost to build a website with AI?
The tool costs 0 to about 25 dollars a month for a normal site: Lovable Pro 25 dollars, Bolt Pro 18 dollars billed yearly, Hostinger 2.49 dollars introductory with 48 months up front. Your own hours for prompting, copy and testing are the biggest cost.
What is Lovable?
Lovable is an AI tool that builds a website or web app from a plain-language description. You chat with it and it writes the code, with hosting and a database if you want. The code is yours and downloadable from the Pro plan.
Is an AI-built website good for SEO?
Not by itself. The tool does not know your search terms, writes generic copy, and older Lovable projects send an almost empty page that JavaScript fills later. With text in the HTML, a page per search term and your own copy, it can be.
Can I have an AI website improved later?
Yes. A builder can review the site, rewrite the copy and fix the technical side. Sometimes rebuilding is faster than repairing, especially when the site renders in the browser.
Do I own a site that AI builds?
On Lovable and Bolt the code is yours and can be downloaded. On AI website builders such as Wix or Hostinger the site stays on their platform. Also check where your database and form data are stored, and that the domain is in your own name.
