Question

What is a good CTR in Google Ads?

For search ads the average sits around 6.6 percent, with industries roughly between 5.5 and 7.6 percent; if you are clearly lower, your ad does not match what people search for.

What the number says, the averages per industry, what 3 against 6 percent costs, and what to do when you are below.

What your click-through rate tells you

  • If you advertise on your service and your cityThen 5 to 8 percent is common; lower points to a weak match between search term and ad.
  • If you advertise on your own brand nameFar above average is normal: whoever types your name is looking for you.
  • If it concerns display or video adsThe rate is much lower; do not compare them with search ads.
  • If your CTR is high but enquiries stay awayPeople do click, but your page does not convince.
  • If your CTR drops while you changed nothingStronger competitors or an AI summary sit above your ad; rewrite and test again.

What the number says

CTR, click-through rate, is the share of impressions where someone clicked: two hundred clicks on four thousand impressions is 5 percent. It mainly shows how well your ad matches what someone searched for. An ad that names exactly the service and the city searched for gets more clicks than a generic one. Google counts your expected CTR in your quality score and in the ranking, so an ad that gets clicked more can rank higher for less. How a local campaign works is in how does Google Ads work for local businesses; the term itself under CTR.

What your ad puts first, per industry

IndustryWhat belongs in the headline or copy
Construction and homethe service plus the town
Restaurants and foodaddress, opening hours and whether you take bookings
Legal servicesyour specialism, not your name
Dentistswhether you take new patients, and online booking
Auto repairyour phone number and whether you can help today
Business servicesa concrete benefit with a number

Compare with yourself first: your own click-through rate of last quarter, per ad group, is a better yardstick than any industry average, especially as public benchmarks are mostly American. Three things move your rate outside your ad. An AI summary above many results leaves fewer clicks, as is SEO dead explains. Dynamic Search Ads are folding into AI Max, where Google picks more search terms itself; see the news on AI Max. And ads in ChatGPT are arriving in Europe, with their own click behaviour; see ChatGPT ads in Europe.

What 3 against 6 percent costs

CTRClicks at 10,000 impressionsCost at 2.50 euro a clickEnquiries at 5 percent conversion
3 percent300750 euro15
6 percent6001,500 euro30

More clicks cost more, so a higher CTR is not cheaper per month by itself. The gain lies in what you get from the same impressions, and in a lower click price because expected CTR counts. What matters is the cost per enquiry: work it out with the ROAS calculator and the Google Ads budget calculator, and see what you spend per month in Google Ads cost.

When you sit below the average

  1. Put the search term, or the service and the city, literally in the headline.
  2. Split campaigns per service, so each ad fits one group of search terms.
  3. Exclude search terms unrelated to your offer, such as jobs or free.
  4. Add your phone number, address and links to your key pages.
  5. Test two versions of an ad against each other and keep the better one.

If your click-through rate is fine but enquiries stay away, the page is the problem: a landing page that delivers what the ad promises gets more from the same clicks.

Google Ads

How VBS improves your CTR and cost per enquiry

We split your campaigns per service, write ads that put the search term and your benefit first, and send every click to a page about exactly that service. Then we measure not the click-through rate alone, but what an enquiry costs. That is Google Ads; torn between ads and organic search, read SEO or Google Ads. For SN Group we built the cost calculator that works as their landing page.

More clicks that also bring something in?

We write ads per service, with a page that delivers what they promise, and measure what an enquiry costs.
