CTR tells you nothing about what happens after the click, but it does tell you how well your promise matches what someone wanted at that moment. That is why both Google and Meta watch it. An ad few people click looks less relevant to them, and you pay more per click for it: Google builds expected CTR into your Quality Score and therefore into your cost per click. Search Console shows the same measure for your organic results, per query and per page.
One headline, rewritten
A high CTR with a weak landing page only spends money faster: plenty of clicks, no enquiries. After CTR, always look at how the page converts, which is conversion rate optimisation, and at what a customer ends up costing, the CPA.
A hundred people see your result. Who clicks?
Each dot is a person who sees your result. The blue ones click.
Normal click-through rates by channel
A searcher has a question; someone scrolling a feed does not. Compare within one channel, and preferably against your own figures from last month.
| Channel | Average CTR | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Google, organic position 1 | 27.6% | The top result gets one click in four |
| Google, top three together | 54.4% of all clicks | Below third place it goes quiet |
| Google Ads search, all industries | 6.64% | A search ad gets read |
| Google Ads, legal services | 5.87% | Cautious searchers compare first |
| Google Ads, real estate | 7.61% | Plenty of clicks, few enquiries |
| Display and social feeds | Usually below 1% | Nobody was looking for you |
The ad figures come from US accounts in 2026; the organic figures from an analysis of four million search results. What clicks cost per month is covered in what Google Ads costs, and the Google Ads budget calculator shows what a better CTR does to your budget.
Why CTR falls while you grow
Business Centrum, a payroll bureau in Ghent, went from 220 to 10,200 impressions a day in Google in five weeks, and from 3 to 228 clicks a day. Its click-through rate across all queries rose from about 1.4 to 2.2 percent, far below the 27.6 percent of a first place. That is normal: a site that starts appearing for thousands of new queries sits on page two for many of them, where hardly anyone clicks. Look per query, never at the total.
Two other causes are common. Something sits above you: ads, the local map, a featured snippet or an AI overview. Pew Research found that when an AI summary appeared, users clicked an ordinary result in 8 percent of visits, against 15 percent without one, which is why being named in those answers matters; see generative engine optimisation. Or your title no longer matches how people search. If you sell in several countries, write titles per market rather than translating them: the words buyers type differ between British and American English, let alone between languages.
The most useful number in Search Console
A low CTR on a query where you already rank in the top three. Those are visitors you have earned and are not getting. Rewrite that page's title and description before touching anything else, and preview the result in the SERP preview tool.
Questions about click-through rate
Does CTR affect my Google rankings?
Evidence from the US antitrust trial in 2023 showed Google uses click data to refine results. But a title that wins clicks without answering the question gains nothing over time. In Google Ads, expected CTR counts directly.
What is the difference between CTR and conversion rate?
CTR measures who clicks out of everyone who sees you. Conversion rate measures who acts, by enquiring or buying, out of everyone who lands on your site.
Why is my CTR in Search Console so low?
Usually because you rank on page two or beyond for many queries. Filter for queries with an average position under 10: that is where a low CTR is a real problem.
