Toptal alternatives fall into two groups. If you want one senior developer inside your own team, the alternatives are other vetted marketplaces such as Upwork Business Plus or a freelance platform such as Malt. If you actually need a product built and kept running, the alternative is a team: a nearshore team in Europe, an agency, or your own hire. We work from Belgium, so this page also says what a team in Western Europe does differently.
We are a software and web agency in Ghent, Belgium, not a talent network. On the team options we are not neutral, and we say so. All four ways to get developers in Europe, from an employer of record to a fixed-price project, are compared in hire developers in Europe.
Toptal in short
Toptal presents itself as a network of the top 3 percent of freelance talent: developers, designers, marketing experts, product and project managers. Toptal sets itself against typical employment and against marketplaces such as Upwork: a Toptaler can be found as fast as 48 hours, there is no recruiting fee and no termination cost, candidates are pre-screened on skills and soft skills including English, and every new engagement starts with a no-risk trial in which you pay nothing if it does not work out and may keep the work. You pay by the hour, part-time or full-time at a fixed weekly price; you hear the rates in the intake call.
Why companies look for a Toptal alternative
- The rate is not publicYou only learn the price after the intake. For a budget decision you want ranges first.
- One person, not a teamA Toptaler joins your team and you lead them. If you have no technical lead, someone still has to own architecture, testing and releases.
- ContinuityA freelancer can move on after the engagement. For a product that must run for years, knowledge has to stay somewhere.
- Language and marketScreening includes English. If your users work in Dutch, French or German, you need someone who builds and writes for them.
One senior, or a team: who carries what
- carries it
- partly, or if agreed
- stays with you
Not a ranking: each column fits another situation.
Toptal alternatives side by side
| Route | Who screens | How visible the price is | What you lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toptal | Toptal, before you see a candidate | Rate after the intake, no recruiting fee | The person, inside your team |
| Upwork Business Plus | Upwork screens, then you choose | 10 percent on top of a visible rate | The person |
| Malt | You | Day rates on profiles | The person |
| A team in Western Europe | The team itself | A quote per project or per month | The outcome |
| Your own hire | You | Salary plus employer costs | Everything |
Speed differs too. Toptal promises someone within 48 hours, Upwork and Malt take days, a team plans for a few weeks and then runs at a steady pace, and a hire takes months. After the engagement you scale down within weeks at Toptal, start a new contract on a platform, agree maintenance with a team, and keep your own developer until they leave.
What a senior costs per market
Public surveys give ranges for senior freelance developers; Toptal does not publish its rates, so ask for them in the intake and compare like with like: the same seniority, the same hours, the same notice period.
| Market | Senior freelance developer, per hour |
|---|---|
| Belgium | 65 to 120 euros |
| Netherlands | 80 to 125 dollars |
| Germany | 85 to 140 dollars |
| United Kingdom | 78 to 125 dollars |
| United States | 95 to 150 dollars |
The Belgian range covers an IT consultant or developer working independently; the others come from a survey of more than 5,000 freelancers, in dollars.
The ranges overlap more than the reputation of each market suggests. A senior in Belgium is not cheap, but works in your time zone and often in three languages.
Our own worked example: six months of one senior at 32 hours a week is about 830 hours. At 80 euros an hour that is about 66,400 euros; at 120 euros, about 99,600. Whether that is cheap depends on what the person delivers without you leading them, and on what happens to the knowledge when they leave. What developers charge per country is in web developer hourly rate; where outsourcing pays off is in best countries to outsource software development, and how an agency works across borders on web development agency in Europe.
When to hire a person and when to hire a team
- Hire a person(through Toptal, Upwork or Malt) when you have a technical lead, a clear backlog and a gap of one skill: a React developer, a data engineer, a designer for a sprint.
- Hire a teamwhen nobody in your company owns the software: you need someone to decide architecture, write and test the code, release it safely and maintain it. That is what custom software and web application development mean at an agency.
- Hire your own developerwhen the software is your product and you will need the skill for years. Until then, a team can build version one and hand it over.
Whether you should build at all, or buy a SaaS tool, is weighed in build vs buy software. Write down what the software must do before any intake: the software requirements template helps.
When Toptal remains the best choice
Toptal stays the best choice when you need someone this month, inside a team that already knows what it builds, and the role is purely technical, in English. The trial period then weighs heavily: a week or two to see whether the person fits, without paying if they do not. And if you want to scale up and down within weeks rather than hire and fire, Toptal builds that flexibility into its rate.
Ask this in any intake, Toptal or not
- What is the hourly or weekly rate, and what is the notice period?
- How long is the trial, and what happens to work done during it?
- Who owns the code from the first commit, and where does it live?
- Who leads the person day to day: you, or someone on their side?
- How is personal data of your customers handled, and is there a data processing agreement?
- What happens to knowledge and access when the engagement ends?
- Which language will they write in, for code comments, documents and users?
Toptal and its alternatives, briefly
What is a cheaper alternative to Toptal?
Upwork and Malt show rates on profiles, so you can find lower ones, but you do more of the screening yourself. A nearshore team prices per project or per month instead of per person.
Is Toptal better than Upwork?
They work differently. Toptal screens before you see anyone and starts with a trial; Upwork lets you compare proposals, with a 10 percent fee on Business Plus for access to its top 1 percent.
Is there a Toptal alternative in Europe?
Malt is a European platform with many freelancers in France, Belgium and Germany. If you need a product rather than a person, a development team or agency in your time zone is the other route.
How fast can I hire through Toptal?
Toptal promises as fast as 48 hours, against one to four months for typical employment. Add the time to onboard the person: access, a ready backlog and a first week to learn your code.
