Upwork alternatives in Europe come in four kinds: another platform such as Malt, a vetted network such as Toptal, a nearshore team in another European country, or an agency in your own market. Which fits depends less on the platform fee than on what you are hiring for: a task with an end, or a product that must run for years.

This page puts the options side by side: what Upwork charges, how the alternatives work, what a project costs in total, and who each route fits. We are an agency in Ghent, Belgium, that builds software, not a platform. On the last options we are not neutral.

Upwork in short

On Upwork you post a job, freelancers send proposals and you choose who does it. You pay by the hour or per milestone, through escrow: you only pay for work you approve. Getting started is free.

On top of the freelancer's amount you pay a marketplace fee: 5 percent on the Basic plan, 10 percent on Business Plus. On Basic, each new contract adds a one-off contract initiation fee of 0.99 to 14.99 dollars. Business Plus gives access to Expert-Vetted talent, freelancers Upwork screens itself. The freelancer pays their own fee of 0 to 15 percent per contract, which shows up in their rate.

Is Upwork safe? Your money sits in escrow until you approve the work, so you do not pay for nothing. Quality depends on whom you pick: look at earlier work that resembles yours, and start with a small paid trial.

Why companies look for an Upwork alternative

  • The selection is on youReading dozens of proposals, planning calls and judging a trial task costs time you do not bill.
  • Single freelancers, no teamBuilding a platform takes design, code, testing and maintenance. On a marketplace those are three or four contracts you coordinate yourself.
  • Time zones and languageA developer twelve hours away answers tomorrow. A team in Europe answers today, and can work in your customers' language.
  • Who stays after the project?Software lives. After launch come questions, bugs and new wishes, and you want the same people.

On every platform you select yourself, except at Toptal, which screens and starts with a trial period. After the project you start a new contract or booking on a platform; with a team or agency you agree maintenance.

What a project costs in total

Our own worked example: a web application of 250 hours at 80 euros an hour, so 20,000 euros of work. That rate sits inside what senior freelancers charge in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. We count everything in euros to keep it readable.

The platform fee is rarely the biggest difference. The biggest difference is what the table leaves out: how many hours you spend on selection and follow-up, whether the work is tested, and who maintains it a year from now. Where outsourcing development pays off is in best countries to outsource software development, and whether to build at all in build vs buy software.

A freelancer, a network or a fixed team

  • Hire a freelancer through a platformfor a defined job with a clear end: an integration, a prototype, a code audit.
  • Hire through a vetted network such as Toptalif you want a senior inside your own team and keep the lead yourself.
  • Hire a fixed teamwhen it is a product: a web application, a client portal or an app that must last for years. How a nearshore team in Belgium works is on nearshore software development.

A written specification helps in every case: start with the software requirements template.

What a team in Europe changes

Hiring a team inside the EU instead of individual freelancers worldwide changes three things. Overlap: a team in your time zone joins your stand-up and answers the same day. Rules: data of your EU customers stays under the GDPR, and a contract under EU law is easier to enforce than one across continents. Continuity: a team keeps knowledge when one person leaves. The rate is higher than in the cheapest markets and lower than in London or Zurich; how rates compare per country is in web developer hourly rate. When Upwork remains the best choice

Upwork stays the best choice when you need a rare specialism, such as an unusual language or an integration with a foreign system, and your team already works in English and remotely. It fits a small, defined job with a clear end and a result you can test yourself. And if you want a quick read of the market, post a job and you have ten proposals to compare within days.

How to start with a freelancer, wherever you find one

  1. Write down what it must do, not how: who uses it, which steps, which data, what it need not do.
  2. Start with a small paid trial of a few days. A week of working together tells you more than ten calls.
  3. Agree where the code lives: in an environment in your name, from day one.
  4. Ask for short, working steps: something clickable every week or two.
  5. Record the handover: documentation, credentials, who manages what when the work stops.

Upwork and its alternatives, briefly

What is a good Upwork alternative for developers?

For a senior inside your own team, a vetted network such as Toptal. For a product that must last, a fixed team, nearshore or in your own market. For a French or Belgian freelancer, Malt.

Is there a European alternative to Upwork?

Malt is a European freelance platform, strong in France and Belgium. A nearshore team in another EU country is the other European route.

Upwork or Fiverr?

On Upwork you post a job and pick from proposals; on Fiverr you buy a fixed package. Upwork fits larger or longer jobs, Fiverr small tasks.

Do I pay VAT when I hire through Upwork from the EU?

A freelancer in another EU country usually invoices without your local VAT and you self-assess under the reverse charge. Ask your accountant how it enters your return.

What does an Upwork freelancer pay the platform?

Freelancers pay Upwork their own fee of 0 to 15 percent per contract, which is why their rate on the platform is often a little higher than off it.

Can I hire an Upwork freelancer directly later?

Upwork has its own rules and a conversion fee for that. Read the terms before you agree anything outside the platform.

Custom software

How VBS helps you with custom software

We build software with a fixed team in Ghent, Belgium: one team carrying design, code, testing and maintenance, in English, Dutch or French, with the code and servers in your name. For DA Logistics we built a platform for fuel, planning and fleet used daily by about thirty drivers; new versions go live in 2 to 6 seconds, with a way back. For Zuco Logistics the same core went live in an afternoon. More on custom software; weighing a freelancer against a team? Book a call.

A project that must outlast a contract?

Tell us what your software must do. We will say whether a freelancer is enough, or what a fixed team would do.

Optional, if you prefer a call.

What do you want to achieve, and what is already there?

We only use your details to reply to you.
