Black Friday 2026 Europe: the rules and a plan for your shop

The dates, the EU rules on discounts and a plan per week, so your offer sells without eating your margin.

Black Friday 2026 in a content calendar: the fourth quarter of a web shop shipping to four countries, with Black Friday on 27 November and Cyber Monday on 30 November

A Friday that starts weeks before

Black Friday 2026 in Europe falls on Friday 27 November, with Cyber Monday on 30 November. For many online shops it is the busiest week of the year, and for many buyers the moment to make a purchase they put off for weeks. The winners are rarely the shops with the biggest discount, but the ones that were ready: visible in Google and on social media, fast on a phone, with a discount that holds up.

Europe adds rules that American guides leave out. Since the EU Omnibus directive, a discount must be shown against the lowest price of the previous 30 days. And some countries add their own: Belgium freezes announced discounts on clothing, shoes and leather goods in the month before its January sales, from 2 December this year. Below: the dates, the rules, a plan per week and the mistakes we see every year.

The dates around Black Friday

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, the fourth Thursday of November. In 2026 that is Thursday 26 November, so Black Friday falls on Friday 27 November. In Europe it is not a holiday, but a habit that grew year after year.

The EU rule on your Black Friday discount

Since the EU Omnibus directive, a shop that announces a price reduction must show the prior price: the lowest price it applied in the 30 days before. That applies in every member state. National rules add detail; Belgium, for example, sets the reference per sales channel, uses seven days for products on sale for less than 30 days, and allows a progressive discount within one campaign of up to 30 days. A fake countdown or a pre-ticked add-on is as banned during a sale as outside it; ten such dark patterns are listed with their rule, and the full list for EU stores is in ecommerce legal requirements.

A worked example: a jacket costs EUR 180 in early October. On 3 November you raise it to EUR 200, and on 27 November you advertise "30 percent off, now EUR 140". The lowest price in the previous 30 days was EUR 180, so you may show 22 percent, not 30. Raising prices to show a bigger discount risks a finding for misleading pricing, in any EU country.

In 2027, 3 January falls on a Sunday, so Belgian sales start on Saturday 2 January and the freeze moves a day earlier.

What shops ask us before Black Friday

When is Black Friday 2026?

On Friday 27 November 2026. Cyber Monday is Monday 30 November. Many shops start the Monday before or run the offer through the weekend.

Can I show a discount against my old list price?

Not in the EU. An announced reduction must show the lowest price you applied in the previous 30 days. A price raised just before Black Friday counts.

Does Europe have Black Friday?

Yes. It is not a holiday anywhere in Europe, but shops in most EU countries run offers on the Friday after US Thanksgiving, and buyers expect it.

Can my fashion shop keep the discount running into December in Belgium?

Not for clothing, shoes and leather goods sold to Belgian consumers. From 2 December 2026 Belgium's pre-sales freeze applies until its sales start on 2 January 2027.

Country rules that catch foreign shops

Most EU countries let you run Black Friday as you like within the 30-day rule. Some regulate sales periods. Belgium is the one that catches foreign fashion shops: it has two official sales periods (January and July) and, in the month before each, a freeze on announced discounts for clothing, leather goods and shoes. For the January 2027 sales that freeze runs from 2 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, because 3 January 2027 is a Sunday and the sales start on 2 January. A fashion shop selling to Belgian consumers ends its Black Friday offer by 1 December; what still works after that is in Christmas marketing ideas for small businesses. The full Belgian picture is in Belgium's sales period 2027.

What it means for your type of shop

A shop selling across several EU markets

Plan one offer, check country rules per market, and keep the reference price per channel. Your ads need a budget per market, because click prices rise in every country in the same week. If you ship from outside the EU, add the EU 3 euro customs duty per item type to your sums.

A small shop with a fixed range

Pick a handful of products whose margin allows a discount and make a clear offer. A discount on everything eats margin on products that sell anyway. Work it out with the margin calculator.

A fashion shop

Your Belgian offer stops on 1 December. Plan stock so you are not left with surplus you can only discount to Belgian buyers from 2 January.

A shop with a physical store

Store and webshop are two channels, each with its own reference price. A discount that is right in the store can be wrong online if your online price was lower in recent weeks.

Five weeks to 27 November

  1. Week of 26 October: pick productsWhich products, which discount, which stock. Check your margin per product.
  2. Week of 2 November: build pagesAn offer page findable on your brand plus Black Friday, and product pages that load fast.
  3. Week of 9 November: ready campaignsAds, mailing and posts made and approved, budgets set per market.
  4. Week of 16 November: test everythingCheckout on a phone, discount codes, stock alerts, the withdrawal button.
  5. Week of 23 November: run and adjustCheck daily what sells, shift budget, restock.

Being found in Black Friday week

People search for your brand plus "black friday", a product plus "discount", and "black friday" plus a category. What works:

  • A fixed offer pageUse the same address every year, such as /black-friday, and leave it up after the offer with a line for next year. It builds authority instead of starting over. For each language, give it its own page in that language.
  • Speed on a phoneMost visitors arrive on a phone. Test your offer page and checkout with the website speed test before the rush.
  • Ads with a ceilingClick prices climb in offer week. Set a daily budget your margin can carry and check return with the ROAS calculator, and the monthly picture with the Google Ads budget calculator.
  • Your own list firstAn email to your customers costs almost nothing and converts best. How to write one people read is in how to write a newsletter.
  • Social as the announcementA run of posts and reels in the week before; plan them with a content calendar template.

The mistakes we see every year

A discount that does not match last month's prices. An offer page that goes live on Friday morning and is found nowhere. Ads that run out of daily budget by 2 pm. A checkout that stalls on a phone at the discount code. And a returns policy nobody can find, while the EU withdrawal button has been required since June 2026, offer products included. If your offer copy says "eco" or "sustainable", read about the EU ban on generic green claims too.

On the morning of 27 November

  • The offer page is live, linked from your home page and fast on a phone.
  • Prices show the discount against the lowest price of the previous 30 days.
  • Your mailing goes out early and ads run on the approved budget.
  • Stock, delivery time and returns are visible on every offer product.
  • Someone watches orders, questions and payment problems all day.

After the offer: what to measure

The week after, look at revenue per product, margin after discount and ads, the share of new customers and the number of returns. An offer that drove revenue but mostly let existing customers buy at a discount what they would have bought at full price was expensive. An offer that brought new customers who return in January was cheap. If your shop does not perform the rest of the year, start with why is my online store not selling.

How VBS gets your offer week ready

From Ghent we build online shops that are fast on a phone, with a fixed offer page and pricing that follows EU rules, in every language you sell in. For offer week we set up your Google Ads and Facebook and Instagram ads with a budget your margin can carry. We know peak-season advertising: for Les Terrasses de Durbuy our golf reel ran as three Meta ads from 13 December 2025 to 24 January 2026, planned around the holidays. What Shopify costs in euro is in Shopify cost. Want to be ready for 27 November? Book a call.
