Digital marketing trends 2027: what changes in Europe

Six shifts with a date, and the EU detail a US trend list leaves out.

Digital marketing trends 2027: OpenAI's help article on ads in ChatGPT, which have shown across Europe since August 2026

The three digital marketing trends of 2027 that matter most for a company selling in Europe: search happens more and more inside AI answers, Google Ads takes over the steering of your campaigns, and you measure with fewer cookies than you are used to. Alongside those, TikTok sells inside its app, WhatsApp messages cost more, and AI images must be disclosed.

Most trend lists come from the US and skip what makes Europe different: consent rules that shrink your data, the Digital Markets Act that changes Google's results, the AI Act's labelling duty, and consumer rules on the way. This one is written from Ghent, Belgium, with a date and an official source for every shift.

Trend 1: search moves into AI answers

AI Overviews and AI Mode run across most of Europe and its languages. ChatGPT has become a search engine for many, and since 24 August 2026 it shows ads across Europe, contextual rather than personalised in the EEA. One European detail: ads inside AI Overviews run in English in twelve countries, none of them in the EU. In Europe, being cited in the answer is still the main way in. How to measure and earn that is in our SEO trends for 2027.

What it costs: time to make your site answer the questions buyers ask, with information nobody else has; no separate AI budget. What it returns: visibility in a channel you can now measure per country in Search Console. Leave it if you sell only through referrals. For ChatGPT ads, start small: a test budget for three months, measured per click, and only once your Google search ads already return their cost.

Trend 2: Google Ads takes the wheel

In February 2027 Google moves Dynamic Search Ads to AI Max automatically, and call-only ads stop serving. On 14 October 2026 Google announced channel prioritisation and a new budget split. You give goals and material; Google picks queries, copy and placements. It works when Google knows what a good lead is, which brings us to measurement.

What it costs: nothing extra, but you lose control if your conversion data is thin. What it returns: more reach with less manual work. Leave it if you get only a handful of leads a month: the system then learns too little, and a tight campaign on exact keywords does better. If you run accounts in several countries, check each one before February; an account you rarely open is the one that changes without you noticing.

Trend 3: measuring with fewer cookies

This is where Europe differs most. Since 15 June 2026 only consent mode, the visitor's choice in your banner, decides whether Analytics shares data with Google Ads. Meta now counts only link clicks as clicks for conversions. EU authorities require a reject button as visible as accept, and every visitor who refuses drops out of your reported conversions. A US benchmark built on full tracking does not apply. Cookieless analytics next to your tags gives you a number you can trust. EU plans to ease cookie rules are still being negotiated; follow them in the Digital Omnibus and cookies.

Trend 4: buying inside the app

TikTok Shop opened in Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria and Poland on 15 June 2026: a viewer taps a product card in a video and pays in the app. It suits brands whose product convinces in twenty seconds of video, not services. What else changes on Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok is in the social media trends for 2027.

Trend 5: messages get a price

Since 1 October 2026, each business number on the WhatsApp Business API gets 1,000 free service conversations a month; beyond that you pay, and the price depends on the customer's country, not yours. For a shop sending order and delivery updates across Europe, the bill changes; the numbers are in WhatsApp Business pricing from October 2026.

Trend 6: EU rules that touch marketing

Since 2 August 2026 the AI Act requires transparency, and by 2 December 2026 providers of generative AI must mark their output. A realistic AI image or video gets disclosed; how, is in AI-generated content labelling from December 2026. Put it in writing with the AI policy template. The Digital Markets Act already changed Google's results in Europe, with a fine for favouring its own services. And the Digital Fairness Act, an EU law against dark patterns and subscription traps, has been announced but was not yet a proposal on 25 October 2026. The full list of what starts next year is in new EU rules in 2027.

Your 2027 plan, in this order

  • Fix measurement first: cookieless analytics plus conversions that match reality
  • Pick two trends where your buyers already are, not six
  • Review Google Ads campaigns before the February 2027 changes
  • Write down an AI policy that covers AI images and disclosure
  • Check results per EU market, not as one European number
  • Review spend per channel every quarter and move budget to what works

A worked example: one budget, three markets

How that looks in practice, with assumed figures. A software company in Amsterdam sells a scheduling tool to small firms in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and spends EUR 3,000 a month on marketing. Its buyers search, compare and book a demo.

ItemPer monthWhy
Google search ads, Netherlands and BelgiumEUR 1,600Where demos come from today; reviewed before February 2027
Google search ads, GermanyEUR 600A separate account and language, judged on its own numbers
ChatGPT ads test, three monthsEUR 300Small enough to learn, large enough to measure
LinkedIn content and adsEUR 500Reach among owners who are not searching yet
TikTok ShopEUR 0It does not sell a product in an app
Pages answering buyers' questions, per languageown timeFor AI answers and Google, without media spend

What it leaves out matters as much: no TikTok, no WhatsApp automation, no channel added because a trend list mentioned it. After a quarter it compares the cost per demo per market and per channel, and moves the ChatGPT test budget either up or back to search.

Six trends is too many for most companies. Pick two, put them in your marketing plan with a date and a budget, and size that budget with the marketing budget calculator. The marketing calendar 2027 has the dates you should not miss, and the AI trends for 2027 cover what AI changes beyond marketing.
