Website hosting costs roughly 2 to 8 euro a month in the first term and 8 to 28 euro afterwards for shared hosting, 20 to 40 euro a month for managed WordPress after the promotion, 20 dollars a month per member for a developer platform such as Vercel Pro, and nothing for a static site inside a CDN's free plan, all before VAT. The biggest gap is not between providers but between the promo price of year one and the renewal price you pay after. Domain and email come on top.
This guide compares four kinds of hosting with prices from European and international hosts on 24 October 2026, works them out over three years at renewal prices, lists the costs no pricing page shows, and explains how we host the sites we build. For the full yearly cost of a website beyond hosting, see website cost per year.
Four kinds of hosting
| Kind | What it is | Who it suits | Per month, before VAT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | your site shares a server with many others, with a control panel and often email | a small WordPress or CMS site | 2 to 8 euro on promo, 8 to 28 euro after |
| Managed WordPress | hosting tuned for WordPress, with updates, backups and staging | WordPress users who want maintenance handled | 7 to 9 euro on promo, 20 to 40 euro after |
| Developer platform | Vercel, Netlify and similar: deploy from a code repository, functions included | sites and apps built in a modern framework by a developer | Vercel Pro 20 dollars, its free Hobby tier is for personal projects |
| Static site on a CDN | the site is ready-made files served from a global network | a fast business site without a database | 0 within a free plan, then pay as you use |
A dedicated server, a machine of your own for large sites or apps, costs many times more; at the Belgian host Combell it starts at 240.40 euro a month. A normal business site does not need one.

Hosting cost over three years
Our own worked example for a small business site, before VAT, with the promo in year one and the renewal price after:
| Plan | Year 1 | Years 2 and 3 | Three years |
|---|---|---|---|
| SiteGround StartUp | 35.88 euro | 383.76 euro | 419.64 euro |
| Combell WordPress hosting, at list price | 233.88 euro | 467.76 euro | 701.64 euro |
| Combell Managed WordPress, at list price | 239.88 euro | 479.76 euro | 719.64 euro |
| SiteGround GrowBig | 65.88 euro | 671.76 euro | 737.64 euro |
| Vercel Pro, one member | 240 dollars | 480 dollars | 720 dollars |
| Static site on CloudFront Free plan | 0 | 0 | 0 |
For Combell we use the list price, because promo terms vary. Hostinger is left out of the sum: you prepay 95.52 euro for four years, and only then does the renewal price apply.
What always comes on top
| Cost | Per year, roughly | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | depends on the extension; a .com at Combell starts at 9.99 euro for the first year | sometimes free for year one with hosting; see choose a domain name |
| Email on your domain | Google Workspace Business Starter 6.80 euro per user per month in Belgium | basic email is often included in shared hosting |
| Backups | included on managed hosting, sometimes paid on shared | ask how often and how long they are kept |
| SSL certificate | usually included free | without an SSL certificate browsers show a warning |
| WordPress maintenance | hours or a maintenance contract | core, theme and plugin updates; see is WordPress safe |
The cost nobody invoices you for is downtime. On shared hosting you share a server with other sites; if one of them draws heavy traffic or gets hacked, yours can slow down. Ask your host what happens in an outage: how fast they respond, whether you get alerted, and whether they guarantee uptime. A static site on a CDN has no server for you to maintain and no database that can fail.
How we host the sites we build
The sites we build, such as those for Business Centrum, SN Group and Villa Lidia, are static exports on Amazon S3 with CloudFront in front. Every page is a ready-made file served from a global network; there is no WordPress, no database and no plugin to update. Forms run through a small function on AWS.
What such a site costs to build is in website cost; with us a custom site starts from 1,500 euro. Page weight also decides how fast a page loads: when we rebuilt Villa Lidia, a holiday villa in Umbria, the homepage went from 8.4 MB to 1.4 MB. How to measure your own is in improve website speed.
Switching hosts without your site or email going down
Moving to another host because the renewal price is too high is often a good call, but the switch needs an order. Hosting, domain and email often come bundled, and moving all three at once risks a day without email.
- Put the site on the new host first, on a temporary address, and check every page and form.
- Set up the mailbox at the new provider, Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, and copy your old mail across.
- Lower the TTL of your DNS records a day ahead, so the change takes effect faster.
- Change the records to the new host and mail server, or transfer the domain with an authorisation code; see how to transfer a domain name.
- Cancel the old plan only once site and email have run for a week without issues.
If your URLs stay the same, little changes for Google. If you change URLs too, because you are rebuilding at the same time, every old URL gets a 301 redirect; the method is in website migration SEO. A site on a builder such as Wix cannot change host at all and has to be rebuilt; the order is in how to cancel Wix.
Which hosting to choose
- Choose shared hosting ifyou run a small WordPress site, handle maintenance yourself and want the lowest price. Watch the renewal price.
- Choose managed WordPress ifyou use WordPress and do not want to handle updates, backups and staging yourself.
- Choose a developer platform ifyour site or app is built in a modern framework by a developer who deploys from a repository.
- Choose a static site ifyou want a fast business site with no maintenance and no monthly hosting bill.
- Choose a commerce platform ifyou sell online; hosting is then part of the plan, see Shopify cost.
Moving hosts leaves your URLs unchanged, so little changes for Google as long as the site loads as fast or faster; see moving a website to a new host. If you are moving and also rebuilding, website maintenance covers what comes after launch. From Ghent, Belgium, we build and host sites for businesses across Europe; see website design.
Hosting per month, per year and after the promo
How much does website hosting cost per month?
Shared hosting costs 2 to 8 euro in the first term and 8 to 28 euro after, managed WordPress 20 to 40 euro after the promo, and a static site nothing inside CloudFront's free plan, before VAT.
How much does hosting cost per year?
For a small site on shared hosting roughly 35 to 70 euro in year one and 120 to 335 euro a year after. Domain and email come on top.
Why does my hosting bill jump after the first year?
Most hosts sell the first term at a promo price and renew at the list price, often three to five times higher. Compare plans on the renewal price.
Can I host a website for free?
A static business site can run inside CloudFront's free plan up to 1 million requests and 100 GB a month. Vercel's free Hobby tier is meant for personal projects, not business sites.
Is cheap hosting bad?
Not necessarily. Check the renewal price, backups, support and what happens in an outage. A low promo with a steep renewal is the usual trap.
