SEO for plumbers
SEO for plumbers in the UK, won town by town

Local SEO for plumbing firms that want the call when someone in their patch searches for a plumber, a boiler service or a gas safety check.
SEO for plumbers in the UK starts on the map
SEO for plumbers in the UK is mostly local. Nobody searches for a plumber in another county. They search "plumber near me", "emergency plumber clevedon" or "boiler service keynsham", and Google answers with a map of three firms before any website appears. Being one of those three, in the towns where you want work, is the job.
That comes from three things you control: a Google Business Profile that is complete and active, a website with a page for each service and town you really cover, and a steady stream of reviews from real jobs. Links and technical work help, but for a plumbing firm with five vans they come after those three. Below is how we approach local SEO for plumbing, what it competes with, which searches deserve a page and what the first twelve weeks look like.
What sits above and beside the map
A search for a plumber can show four kinds of result, and only two of them are SEO.
- Local Services AdsWhere Google offers them, they sit at the very top: a firm with a Google Verified badge after screening, and you pay per lead (a call, a message or a booking), not per click. Plumbers are one of the categories, but availability depends on the region, so check whether your area is covered before you plan around it.
- Search adsPaid text ads for a keyword, paid per click. See how Google Ads works for local businesses.
- The map packThree firms on a map, ranked on distance, relevance and prominence. This is where most local calls come from, and it is driven by your Google Business Profile and your reviews.
- The ordinary resultsWebsites, directories and lead sites. Your service and town pages compete here.
Paid and organic work together. Ads can fill the diary this week; SEO keeps the phone ringing when you stop paying. Whether to start with one or the other is in SEO or Google Ads. If your profile does not show at all, start with Google Business Profile not showing.

- What you pay for
- Local SEOThe work on your profile, pages and reviews
- Ads and paid leadsEvery click or every lead, every month
- When you stop
- Local SEOPages and reviews keep working
- Ads and paid leadsThe calls stop with the budget
- Who you reach

Most plumbing firms do best with SEO as the base and ads to fill quiet weeks or to test a town before writing pages for it.
Searches a plumbing firm should own
Not every search is worth a page. The ones that are combine a job you want with a place you cover. These are the patterns we plan pages for; the exact towns come from your own patch.
| Search pattern | What the person wants | The page that answers |
|---|---|---|
| emergency plumber + town | Someone now, with water on the floor | A town page for emergencies, phone number first |
| boiler service + town | A yearly service, often a contract | A service page with what is included and how reminders work |
| landlord gas safety certificate + town | A check for one or more rented properties | A landlord page: several properties, records sent to tenants |
| blocked drain + town | Urgent, often a business or a flat | A service page with the areas you cover |
| bathroom fitters + town | A project months ahead | Real projects with photos and how a quote works |
| no hot water, boiler losing pressure | A problem, not yet a plumber | A short help article that ends in a booking |
Landlords search for a "gas safety certificate"; the official name is a gas safety record. Use the words people type in headings, and the correct term in the text. The pages themselves are a website job, set out in web design for plumbers. A page that is slow or broken on a phone will not rank whatever it says; the SEO checker shows the obvious problems and technical SEO goes deeper.
The signed job sheet is the moment to ask for a review
- The office sees the job sheet at onceHours, parts and extras are ready for the invoice. Nobody types up paper sheets.
- The tenant gets the recordA copy goes out by email well inside the 28 days the landlord has to hand it over.
- Next year's check is bookedThe check is due every 12 months. The system reminds the landlord before the record runs out.
An example of what we can build, with made-up addresses. You choose which fields a job sheet has.
Reviews and photos straight from the van
Prominence on the map comes for a large part from reviews: how many, how recent, and whether you answer them. A plumbing firm does dozens of jobs a week, so the raw material is there. What is missing is a habit.
The simplest habit is tied to the job sheet. When the customer signs, the message with the job sheet or the gas safety record carries a direct link to your review form. No separate email a week later, no awkward ask at the door. How to word it without breaking Google's rules is in how to get more Google reviews, and the Google review link generator makes the link. If your engineers already use a work order app, the link can go out on its own.
Photos work the same way. A before and after of a bathroom, a new boiler on the wall, a neat manifold: post them to your Google profile and use them on the service page. Real photos of real jobs in real towns tell Google and customers more than any line of text.
Twelve weeks of local SEO for a plumbing firm
After a conversation you get a fixed price per project. This is the order we work in.
- Weeks 1 and 2: the profileName, address or service area, hours, the right primary category and the secondary ones, services, photos. The Google Business Profile categories guide shows how to choose.
- Weeks 3 to 6: service and town pagesThe pages from the table above, written from your own jobs, with a form that asks for the address and a photo. Each page links to its towns and back.
- Weeks 7 to 9: reviews and linksThe review link on every job sheet, answers to every review, and the first local links from suppliers, landlords' groups and the work you do in the community.
- Weeks 10 to 12: measure and adjustCalls and directions from the profile, searches per page in Search Console, requests per page. Pages that do not move get rewritten. How long it usually takes is in how long SEO takes.
Doing it yourself or handing it over
A plumber can do a good part of local SEO alone. The question is time, not skill. This is where we draw the line with firms we talk to.
| Task | Do it yourself when | Hand it over when |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | You can spend an hour setting it up and ten minutes a week on photos and answers | Nobody in the firm will keep it up |
| Reviews | The job sheet already sends a link | Asking depends on someone remembering |
| Service and town pages | You write well and have the evenings | You need twenty pages that each say something different |
| Technical work | The site is simple and fast | The site is slow, old or on a builder you cannot change |
| Links | You know local suppliers and landlords who would link | You have no idea where to start |
The guide doing SEO yourself walks through the first steps. What it costs to hand it over is in SEO cost, and what we do is on local SEO. Firms working on more than their own patch, such as a heating firm covering a whole region, need wider SEO.
If you want the whole firm on one system, from the request form to the job sheet to the review link, read software for plumbers.
Before a plumbing firm spends on search
- Do I need a page for every town?
- Only for towns where you really work and want more work. A page per town with the same text and a different name does more harm than good. Four strong town pages beat forty thin ones.
- Does showing my Gas Safe registration help me rank?
- Treat it as trust, not as a ranking trick. Customers look for it before they ring, so it belongs on every gas page and on your profile. That is reason enough.
- Should I use Local Services Ads?
- If Google offers them for plumbers in your area, they can be worth testing: you pay per lead and get the Google Verified badge after screening. Check eligibility for your area first, and keep building your own profile and pages next to them.
- How is this different from SEO for electricians?
- The approach is the same, the searches and rules differ. Electricians have their own page: SEO for electricians. Heating firms can read SEO for HVAC companies.
