Photography website design that fills your diary, not just your feed

Photography website design: a phone with the moments of a wedding day and the couple's shoot card, beside the file of a wedding commission with gallery and album picks, labelled Example with demo data

Your images are your best salesperson, but only if someone finds them, sees them load quickly on a phone and knows what to do next. A portfolio that ranks for your town and your type of shoot, and an enquiry form that tells a couple straight away whether you are free.

Beautiful is the starting point, not the job

Most photographer websites look lovely: a grid of the best frames, an about page and a contact form. Yet most bookings still arrive through Instagram, word of mouth or a wedding fair. The site does little because Google finds almost no text on it, the images load slowly on a phone, and a visitor cannot see what a shoot costs or whether their date is still free.

Good photographer website design starts from how people search and book. Every type of shoot gets its own page with complete stories, your area appears in the copy, the images are light enough to load on 4G and the form asks for the date, the venue and the package. That is how a visitor becomes an enquiry, and an enquiry becomes a signed contract.

Each kind of photography sells something different

A wedding photographer sells a day that happens once. A headshot photographer sells consistency and turnaround. A family photographer sells a feeling and a moment in the year. Put all three on one page and you convince none of them.

Type of workWhat the visitor looks forWhat the site has to show
WeddingsWhole days, not just the ten best framesThree or four full stories from prep to first dance, packages from a price, a date check
Corporate and headshotsA consistent look across a whole team, quick deliveryTeam headshots side by side, delivery time, usage rights for website and LinkedIn
Family and newbornMood, safety, what to wearLocations, what the session involves, mini session days with fixed slots
Product and foodLighting style, backgrounds, images per dayBefore and after, price per image or per day, sizes for online shops and social media
EventsSpeed, discretion, images the same eveningExamples per type of event, turnaround, who owns the rights

If you work across several of these, the site is built around them, with a page and a form for each. Someone searching for photography website examples will still see your strongest grid on the home page. Behind it sit the pages that sell. If you also shoot video, give it its own page; how businesses think about film is covered under corporate video, and the corporate video cost guide shows how clients budget for it.

Getting found in your town without a studio

Plenty of photographers work from home and travel to the client. You can still rank locally: with a Google Business Profile set up as a service-area business, and with pages that name the towns you actually cover. Whether you can do that without a public address is answered in Google Business Profile without an address. A page for Harrogate with real weddings from Harrogate does more than a list of twenty towns in the footer.

Reviews count on the map. Ask for them when the client opens their gallery, with a direct link from the Google review link generator; getting more Google reviews covers the timing. The local SEO tips cover the rest, and if you would rather someone builds and tracks it for you, that is local SEO.

If you also shoot for couples from abroad, or for international companies, a second language can pay off. How to add one without confusing Google is explained under multilingual website development.

A portfolio template or a site built around your shoots

A ready-made portfolio platform is online in an afternoon. The question is what it does once someone searches for a photographer in your area.

Text for Google
Portfolio templateA title and a few lines per gallery
Site built around your shootsA page per type of shoot with your area, your approach and clients' questions
Loading on a phone
Portfolio templateLarge images, often the full original
Site built around your shootsImages sized per screen, the rest loading only as you scroll
Enquiry
Portfolio templateName, email and a message
Site built around your shootsDate, venue, type of shoot and package, with a check on whether the date is free
Prices
Portfolio templateOften hidden, or in a PDF
Site built around your shootsPackages from a price, with what is included
When to choose it
Portfolio templateInstagram and referrals already fill your diary
Site built around your shootsYou want people searching in your area to find and book you

A template is a fine start. If you want Google to bring enquiries, you need the text and structure a template does not give you.

Fast images without losing their quality

A photographer wants to show work at full quality. A visitor on a phone wants to see something within two seconds. You can have both, as long as the site sends the right size per screen and loads images below the fold only when someone scrolls. Google measures that speed with Core Web Vitals, and a slow gallery costs you both visitors and places in the results. Try your current site in the website speed test; improving website speed shows where it usually gets stuck.

Every image also gets a short description. Alt text such as 'couple portrait at a country house near Ripley at sunset' helps a blind visitor and tells Google where and what you shoot. With schema markup, Google also knows you are a photographer, where you work and what your reviews say.

What you publish, you need to be allowed to publish. Make it part of your contract whether a couple agrees to appear in your portfolio and on social media, and keep that choice with their booking. A solicitor can check the wording of your terms.

Twelve group shots on the phone

  • The group list lives on the cardThe couple fills in the group shots beforehand. On the day you tick them off, and the second shooter sees which group is still missing.
  • What you may use sits with the couplePortfolio, social media or the gallery only: the couple chooses when they sign. What you post later follows that choice.
  • After the day, it runs on its ownThe gallery goes live, the couple picks the album photos, and the balance reminder goes out on the agreed day.

An example of what we can build, with made-up names. You choose which fields a shoot card has.

The enquiry form decides whether you get a booking or a question

A contact form with only a message box brings in questions like 'how much is a wedding?'. You answer by email, then comes a second email, and three days later you know whether the date works. A form that asks the right questions for each type of shoot brings in an enquiry you can quote on straight away.

Type of shootWhat the form asksWhat you do with it
WeddingDate, ceremony and reception venue, guest count, hoursCheck the date, suggest a package, hold it for a few days
HeadshotsNumber of people, location, usage, preferred weekBook a half or full day, put usage rights in the quote
Family or newbornNumber of people, indoors or out, children's agesPick a location and time of day, mini session or full session
ProductNumber of products, sizes, cut-out or styledWork out a price per image or per day
EventDate, hours, type of event, same-day delivery or notConfirm, or refer on if you are already booked

If the date is already taken, the form says so at once and can offer another date or a trusted colleague. That saves you an email and the couple a day of waiting. If you want the form to carry on into an online contract and a deposit later, that is a booking system for your website. The reply itself can be drafted by AI from your own packages, as with an AI quote generator. You read it and send it.

Ask only for what you need. Collecting names, addresses and wedding dates means handling personal data, and your site needs a privacy policy that says what happens to it; do I need a privacy policy explains when.

What goes on the site before it launches

  • Three to five full stories per type of shoot, not just single best frames
  • A page per type of shoot with your area, your approach and a starting price
  • A form that asks for the date, the venue and the package
  • Your business name and contact details in the footer
  • A privacy policy that covers enquiries and the images you keep
  • A Google Business Profile with the same name, area and images as the site
  • Consent from the people who appear recognisably in your portfolio

A site that brings enquiries raises the next question: what happens after? For many photographers it carries on by email, a PDF contract and a transfer link that expires after a week. That can stay as it is. It can also continue inside your site, with an online contract, a deposit that secures the date, and a gallery on your own domain where the client chooses and downloads.

That last part is software rather than a website. A gallery with its own login for each client is a client portal, and we build one as a custom client portal in your own name and style. Selling prints, albums or gift vouchers can sit in the same site too. If you are weighing up a platform against your own site, Wix vs Squarespace and Wix alternatives set out the trade-offs.

Stories, languages and the form set the price

From1,500 euro

Websites from 1,500 euro: your types of shoot with their own pages, your stories, an enquiry form with the date and the groundwork for Google. A gallery of your own, online contracts or deposits are software, and get a fixed price after a conversation. We always start with a conversation, then a fixed price per project.

  • Types of shootHow many types get their own page with stories and copy.
  • LanguagesEnglish only, or a second language for couples and companies from abroad.
  • After the enquiryA plain form, or a date check, an online contract and a gallery on your domain.

What a website costs in general is set out in website cost, with UK figures in website cost in the UK. If you are choosing between a custom build and WordPress, read custom website or WordPress. And if you work alone, web design for freelancers covers the smallest version. To see what your own site would cost, tell us how you work or read how we approach website design.

Working together on your site

  1. A conversation about your shootsWhich shoots you do, which you want more of, where your enquiries come from now and how you deliver.
  2. A fixed price per projectWe agree which pages and which form you need first and give a fixed price for it.
  3. Pages built from your own workYou choose the stories, we write the pages with you and size every image for the screen it lands on.
  4. Live, then tunedAfter a few weeks we look at which pages bring enquiries and which shoots to add next.
