Question

How do you start a podcast for your business?

Pick a listener and a question they have every month, fix a format, record ten episodes before you launch and film as well. YouTube is now one of the biggest podcast platforms.

Not by buying a microphone. You start with a listener you know, a fixed format you can keep up for a year and a plan for what happens to each episode after the recording.

Starting a podcast for business: a microphone on an arm, ready for the first recording

Where to begin, by situation

  • If your customers are mostly other businessesInvite clients and partners as guests. Every conversation is a relationship and a piece of expert content at once.
  • If you mainly want to recruitLet your own people talk about their work. That is employer branding candidates actually listen to.
  • If you have little timePick a short format of 20 minutes every two weeks and record four episodes in half a day.
  • If you already make videoFilm every recording with two or three cameras. One conversation gives you a YouTube video and five short clips.

Many business podcasts die after six episodes. Not because the sound was poor, but because nobody knew in advance who they were for, how often they would come out and what had to happen to an episode after the recording. A podcast is not a one-month campaign. It is an appointment with a listener that you keep every two weeks.

The audience is there. Edison Research finds that 51 percent of people in the UK aged 16 and over listened to a podcast in the last month, and a third in the last week. In February 2025 Google reported that YouTube has more than one billion monthly viewers of podcast content. Whoever starts today makes a podcast people can also watch.

Who should be listening?

Start with a person, not a topic. A buyer in construction, an HR manager at a small firm, a founder hesitating about a first hire. Write down which questions that person has every month and where they look for the answer now. That list becomes your first ten episodes.

A podcast works well for businesses whose product or service needs trust before someone buys. A lawyer, an adviser, a builder, a software maker. Listeners spend half an hour with your voice. That is more attention than a post or an ad ever gets. It fits content marketing: you give away something useful first and build a bond that way.

Choose a format you can keep up for a year

The format is the fixed shape that makes each episode recognisable. It decides how much work each episode takes. Choose one that fits the time you really have, not the podcast you like to listen to yourself.

FormatWork per episodeStrong ifWatch out
Interview with a guestFinding a guest, preparing, recording an hourYou want to build relationships with clients and partnersYou depend on other people's diaries
Duo of two regular voicesRecord an hour, little preparationTwo colleagues talk well togetherWithout structure it gets cosy but empty
Solo with one question per episodeScript or bullet points, record 20 minutesYou have one expert with deep knowledgeNeeds a strong voice and microphone experience
Series around a themePlan ahead, then record in one blockYou want a clear start and end, such as eight partsAfter the series you start from scratch

Fix the length and the rhythm too. Every two weeks, 25 to 40 minutes, is doable for most businesses. Record at least ten episodes before you publish the first. That gives you a buffer for busy weeks, and you already know whether the format works.

Recording on camera and in sound

Weekly listeners in the UK use Spotify most often, then YouTube and Apple. A podcast you only make as audio misses a large share of the audience. So film as well, with a camera per voice and a wide shot. Sound stays the priority: viewers forgive a mediocre picture but drop off at poor audio.

Record in a room with soft materials and no echo, with one microphone per speaker. A bare meeting room full of glass sounds like a bathroom. To see how large the files of an hour of 4K recording get, use the video file size calculator. What a recording costs when you outsource it is in the guide on podcast production cost.

What happens after the recording, per episode

The recording is half the work. What comes after decides whether anyone hears it.

  1. EditCut the silences and the tangents, add a fixed intro and outro and level the sound.
  2. Chapters and titleGive the YouTube version chapters and a title that says which question the episode answers.
  3. ThumbnailA face and three words. Check how it looks next to other videos with the thumbnail preview tool.
  4. Short clipsCut three to five vertical clips of 30 to 60 seconds for your socials. The sizes are in the guide on social media image sizes.
  5. Email and sitePut each episode with a short summary in your newsletter and on its own page on your site.

What does a business podcast bring?

Do not count on thousands of listeners in the first year. A B2B podcast with 200 regular listeners who all fit your audience is worth more than a broad one with 5,000 casual ones. So look at other signals than downloads alone.

Does a client mention an episode in a meeting? Do candidates name the podcast in an application? Do guests say yes when you invite them? Those are the signs it works. A podcast is also a strong form of employer branding and personal branding for the people you put in front of the microphone. And every guest shares the episode with their own network.

Check in YouTube Studio and Spotify for Creators what share of an episode people get through. If they drop off after five minutes, the intro is too long. If they stay to the end, your format works.

More questions about a podcast for your business

How many episodes should I have ready at launch?

Launch with three episodes at once and keep seven in reserve. New listeners then play more than one straight away, and you have peace of mind for the first months.

Do I need to be on every platform?

Yes, and it takes little work. You put the audio on a hosting service that sends it to Spotify, Apple and the other apps. You upload the video to YouTube separately.

Can I use music?

Only music you hold a licence for. A well-known track as an intro leads to a claim or a block.

How long before listeners come?

Count on a few months. A podcast grows through regularity and through guests who share, not through one episode going viral.

How VBS helps you set up your podcast

We start with the listener and the first ten questions, fix the format and set up the recording, on camera and in sound. Then we edit each episode, make the YouTube version with chapters, the thumbnails and the short clips, and schedule them on your channels. You talk, we do the rest. What that covers is on video podcast production. We can run the YouTube channel too, see YouTube channel management, and the clips fit into your social media management.
