Meta ads for local firms
Facebook ads for local businesses that people nearby notice
Google catches people who search. Facebook and Instagram reach the people around you before they search. Here is how to do that without paying for likes.

A café, a garage, a hair salon or a garden centre lives on people within a few miles. Most of them never search for you; they need to see you at the right moment. Facebook and Instagram ads do that: a short video or a photo in the feed of people nearby, with a button to call, book or get directions.
The risk is spending on the wrong goal. Meta optimises for whatever you ask: ask for likes and you get likes. This page shows the goals that bring customers, how to set the area, what the post needs, and how to measure it.

Which goal to pick in Ads Manager
The goal decides who Meta shows your ad to.
- Meta looks for
- Awareness or trafficpeople likely to see or click
- Leads or salespeople likely to fill a form, call or buy
- Good for
- Awareness or traffican opening, an event, a new menu
- Leads or salesbookings, quotes, orders
- Needs
- Awareness or trafficonly the ad
- Leads or salesa pixel or a lead form and enough results to learn
- Risk
- Awareness or trafficclicks that never come back
- Leads or salestoo few results on a tiny budget
Use reach or awareness for local news people should know about. Use leads or sales when you can measure the result, and give it a few weeks.
Setting the area
Draw a radius around your address or pick postcodes and towns. Keep it to the distance people really travel to you: two or three miles for a café, ten or more for a garage or a wedding venue. Meta can widen the audience on its own to find cheaper results; for a local business, check that the ads still land where your customers live.
If your ad is about jobs, housing or credit, Meta treats it as a special ad category with stricter targeting. A shop or a restaurant is not affected, but a local estate agent or a firm hiring staff is. More in Facebook ads for real estate and recruitment advertising.
What a local ad needs
| Part | What works locally | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| First second | your place, your people, your product | a logo on a blank background |
| Primary text | 50 to 150 characters, the offer and the place | a paragraph that gets cut off |
| Headline | about 27 characters, the action | slogans |
| Button | Call now, Get directions, Book now | Learn more on everything |
| Format | vertical video for Reels and Stories, 4:5 for the feed | a landscape TV ad |
Test the post in the Facebook ad preview before it goes live: it shows where the text gets cut off on a phone. Real photos of your shop, your team and your work beat stock images every time.

Post ideas that work for local businesses
| Business | Post | Button |
|---|---|---|
| Café or restaurant | a 10-second video of the dish being made, with the day it is on | Get directions or Book now |
| Garage or car service | a before and after of a real job, with the price of that service | Call now |
| Salon | a short clip of the result, the free slots this week | Book now |
| Shop | a new arrival held by a team member, the shop window behind | Get directions |
| Trade | the team on a job in a nearby street, with the area you cover | Get quote |
Show the place and the people. A local ad works because it is recognisably local: the street, the shopfront, the faces. Rotate posts every few weeks, because the same people see them again and again in a small area. How to use social media for business covers the organic side that keeps your page alive between campaigns.
Measuring results, not reach
The Meta pixel tells Meta which clicks led to a booking or a sale, so it can find more people like them. In the UK it needs consent before it loads, like any marketing cookie; see UK cookie law and run your site through the cookie scanner. Since March 2026 Meta counts only link clicks for click-through conversions on websites and shops, so a share or a save no longer counts as a click that led to a sale. More in the click attribution change.
For calls and walk-ins, the pixel sees nothing. Use a separate number or a short code in the ad, or ask new customers where they heard about you. Tag the links in your ads with the UTM builder, so Analytics shows the visits next to your Google traffic.
What it costs
You set a daily or total budget and Meta spends it. The price per result depends on your area, your goal and how good the post is. Our guide to Facebook ads cost explains how the price is set and what changes it. A strong post on a small budget beats a weak post on a big one.
Facebook or Google for a local business
Google Ads reaches people who already need you: "plumber near me", "Sunday lunch Leeds". Facebook and Instagram reach people nearby who were not looking yet. For an emergency service, start with Google. For a restaurant, a shop or an event, Meta often comes first. Most local businesses end up with both; Meta ads or Google Ads helps you choose where to begin, and local advertising compares the other channels.
Rules that apply to local ads
Meta reviews every ad. It rejects text that suggests you know something personal about the reader, such as "Struggling with debt?", before-and-after images for some products, and misleading claims. If an ad is rejected, the notice in Ads Manager names the policy, and you can edit the ad or ask for a review. Political and social issue ads no longer run in the EU since October 2025; UK businesses that advertise into Ireland or the rest of Europe should keep that in mind.
Offers that work locally
A local ad needs a reason to come now. Not a discount for its own sake, but something people in the area recognise: a new menu for the season, a free check before winter, an evening for parents of the local school, a stand at the town market. Name the place in the first line and show the street or the shopfront in the image, so people know it is near them.
Change the ad every few weeks. In a small area the same few thousand people see your ad, and they stop noticing it after a while. A new image, a new offer or a short video from inside the shop keeps it fresh without raising the budget.

How VBS runs local Meta campaigns
We set up the pixel with consent, pick the goal that pays, and make posts from your own place and people. For Les Terrasses de Durbuy we made a launch reel, a golf reel and carousels, and the golf reel ran as Meta ads that winter. Campaign management is part of our Facebook and Instagram ads service; if you also need a steady stream of posts, see social media management.
